Stivers definitely has many, many problems, but in comparison to the rest of DPS and most local schools, it's far better. The diversity is extremely high. The drug problem is very manageable and small compared to the surrounding schools/districts. There can be cliques but there are no "popular kids," only well-known ones and less well known ones. Bullying goes on here but to a minimal extent, most of the people will either tolerate you or be quite friendly. The consensus for every art magnet seems to be it's fine but could be drastically improved-- a lot of people drop theirs at least once. The academics are incredibly mixed. I've had some amazing teachers that taught me so much and were there for me and I've had some that made me miserable. Overall, the academics are fine, you do learn. The school needs a lot of policy changes and has a lot of problems but I really enjoyed my time at Stivers and made a ton of friends. If in the DPS system, this is definitely your best option!!
My experience at Stivers has overall been superb. This school has led me to become a confident individual who has goals for the future. At first, I was anxious about attending Stivers, however the overwhelming support of staff, teachers, and students made me feel welcomed. Stivers allowed me to pursue many pathways of learning through their variety of classes whether that be Sculpture, Human Geography, Environmental Science, or Piano. The teachers take time with each student to truly find what learning style works for them and adapts their classroom to be a trusted learning space. While their is always room for improvement, I have seen the strides that this school has made to better the students, teachers, and even our Dayton area. Attending Stivers was one of the best decisions I have ever made. I am so grateful for the constant support and my second family at Stivers School for the Arts.
I just want to start off by saying this school is an amazing school! However it’s best to start when you’re in the 7th grade if you get accepted, because with me it was a little hard to adapt coming in my Junior year and that comes from me having to leave a school I have been at since my 7th grade year. I really enjoy dancing (which is my art) and it’s amazing to be surrounded with students that have the same special talent as you. Everyone at Stivers is there because of a special art or talent that they have, you can’t just get in because it’s a public school. You have to be “accepted” upon auditioning, being that it’s a Performing Arts school. I wouldn’t trade my experince at Stivers for the world, I have learned soooo much being at Stivers and I’m thankful for that.
