My school is rather nice for the most part. Other students including myself have a strong system in place to support our academic goals and various extracurricular activities as well. My school also has very few issues with bullying, and I find that it is incredibly easy to talk with other students even if I've only just met them. The biggest issues the school seems to have been a lack of school pride and lack of communication between students and staff. Other than that, the school does a good job at creating a suitable system that students can trust to get them to graduation.
Overall, I have enjoyed my time at Steilacoom High School. The people are great, there are a lot of club and sports opportunities, and the academics are not bad. However, I can not give SHS a perfect score for two main reasons. Firstly, the administration is not very strong. Rules are not enforced, communication is not always efficient, and they often don’t handle certain issues (such as bullying, harassment, etc.) well. Secondly, their standards-based grading system does not help set students up for success. However, with all their flaws, I would still say SHS is a good school. As we are still recovering from covid, I can understand why improvements may be slow.
I like that Steilacoom High School is focused on the success and accomplishments of the students and create and learning environment for everyone. Although, I do feel like the staff need to be more compassionate and have more understanding of what it’s like to be a teenager during 2023. It’s a great place to learn but it also needs to be more welcoming. I would like to see teachers that are genuinely happy to work for SHSD and enjoy teaching us.
