From St. Mary's Academy

We Believe. Two words that inspired our 12 founding sisters as they welcomed the first students to St. Mary’s Academy in 1859. And today, we still believe.

We believe in developing the whole person, in going to college, in leading and changing the world. We believe in girls who lift each other up. We believe in the values of our Catholic founders, the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary. We believe in social justice. We believe in the artist, the thinker, the dancer, the coder, the athlete, the servant, and the leader—especially the leader. We believe young women are powerful.

St. Mary’s Academy is Oregon's oldest continuously-operating secondary school located in downtown Portland. A nationally recognized school of excellence, St. Mary's is an established Catholic all-girls college-preparatory high school that readies students for the future.

St. Mary's is such an incredible place! I have met my very best friends here, and have encountered some of the most amazing teachers that have helped me so much in my journey not only as a student but a person. There are so many activities for students to get involved in, and there is a large amount of pressure to be involved in leadership and to be a perfect student. While the stress culture at St. Mary's is intense and can be very unhealthy mentally, the environment is a lovely place that I would recommend to anyone looking for an academic high school experience. I will say that while the administration is certainly very religious and Catholic, the actual student body does not seem very respectful to Christian beliefs. However, this school is a great place to prepare yourself for college and to gain an academic, exciting, and full high school experience.

By the end of freshman year, I was done. The stress culture & environment of achievement planted ideas that you wouldn't succeed if you don't excel. It is mainly wealthy, privileged kids who want to go to prestigious colleges. I transferred to public school. It may not be perfect, but I feel more open to be myself. I was so excited to go to SMA because of marketing, but I realised that they thrive on stressed, depressed, overachiever teenagers working overtime. This isn't what high school is about. It doesn't have to be this hard, but St Mary's just takes it over the top. If you trust in your child's capabilities and want to make their high school experience enjoyable or at the very least, not stressful, don't send them here. I had a lot of hopes, but I'm frequently disappointed and disillusioned with the lack of encouragement of a community that focuses on kindness, trying your best, genuinely loving learning, and being a good person, not setting yourself up for corporate success.
St. Mary's has been an overall amazing experience. The school is filled with the most qualified educators along with an intense course rigor. There are tons of different ways for students to be supported academically as they adjust to the class load and the challenges which come along with it. Teachers offer study session, Nation Honor Society students offer to tutor, as well as a learning specialist located in the schools learning center. St. Mary's prepares students inside the classroom for success in the real world. There is an amazing group of students there who work to motivate, support and love each other, it is a true sisterhood. The school is very politically active as many students are aware and vocal about current events. These conversations are fostered by teachers and supported. The only problem though is the student body as a whole is very liberal, making it harder for students with differing opinions to share without feeling isolated or ashamed.
