St. Joseph Academy is one of the finest institutions for college preparation in the Rio Grande Valley. The primary reason for this is precisely in the fact that they don't rely on pure academics. Some schools focus on medicine, some on athletics, but SJA focuses on the student. St. Joseph Academy works on the development of character within its students. Students have religious formation and there are innumerable opportunities for service. The students are generally hardworking and are heavily involved in plenty of extracurricular. It has a very healthy atmosphere mentally, spiritually, and otherwise. It was an honorable experience.

What I enjoyed most about St. Joseph Academy is how it, as a private school, allowed me to stay connected to my Catholic faith during my transition from teenager to young adult. However, the atmosphere within the study body itself is very "hostile" so to speak. St. Joseph Academy educates the children of some of the richest families in the Brownsville/Matamoros area, and thus many of these children tend to come across as mean, snobbish, pretentious, and even down right disrespectful towards those of a lower social standing. At times they even act as such towards faculty yet receive little repercussion largely because of their families' influence. Overall, the school appears very impressive on paper and a good portion of the assets available to students do indeed prepare them for college; however, the school itself (though Catholic) does not act or conduct itself in the ecumenical attitude it apparently promotes.
I have been in St Joseph Academy since my freshman year and have loved every single day of it. It is a small school, but that it is a great advantage. We all know each other pretty well, we have the opportunity to really be involved with our community and our parents get to participate in everything. We support each other no matter what and it really feels like a family.
There are not many things I would change about my school, if anything I would love to have more guest speakers to share their experience with us. It has really helped me when we’ve had the opportunity to to learn about successful peoples stories and it inspires me to push forward and give it my best.
