St. John Paul is one of the best communities that I have ever attended. The teachers, faculty, and staff want their students to be successful and provide resources to students that are failing so that they can end up graduating. They care about leading a Christ-like life and being successful. I have had some of the most amazing teachers that I am unafraid of asking for help, or joining in on class discussions. Being on the running teams and being involved in extracurricular activities such as student government has been so enlightening and enriching. There is so much love for this school!
JPII is seated in the fastest growing city of the south, JPII should be booming but isn’t. St. Michael’s in Fairhope, a smaller city, is a faster growing Catholic school. When execs of companies look for a thriving Catholic education in HSV they find JPII, a school without a home field to celebrate events, a band without uniforms, rag tag ‘houses’ vice a student council, lack of cyber security training in a cyber town, parents coaching, etc. which pales to McGill-Toolen, John Carroll, & the new St. Michael’s $5.1M with Phillip Rivers. No surprise when parents send kids to Randolph, Madison Academy, or other school that has facilities & amenities. My neighbors are Catholic & pay more tuition for Randolph with a better reputation. At JPII, good academics & a nice building with meh electives & parent coached sports aren’t going to cut it. If St. Michael’s, established in 2016, in Fairhope, can get Phillip Rivers, JPII needs to step up.
I like that our counselor helps the seniors with college applications and scholarships. And she checks on the senior classes once a month. I think the school does well to prepare their students to prepare for college. The teachers can remember your name, which I think is really nice. The faculty and staff overall are very nice and understanding individuals. I can see why some students may not like the school because of our sports. We have not been doing very well in that area, so athletic students may not like that.
