It is a good school. It allows you to take PSEO classes for college credits. The people are nice. The food is not bad.
St. James High School provides many great teachers and opportunities to grow and be part of the school. The food is average and chances of fitting into the school are really good.
It’s an okay school, nothing special. There is a bit of diversity, but the school treats their students like children and expects them to act like adults. The teachers are a hit or miss, I have a few favorite teacher, but if they don’t like they won’t make an effort to make sure you succeed. A specific teacher doesn’t like me because she heard bad things about me and solely judged me on that alone. Another instance I had, a teacher absolutely hated and publicly humiliated me in front of the class and telling them about my failing grade the year prior for not paying attention, which is completely inappropriate. Usually when a new teacher comes it is never permanent, as there is definitely much better jobs available.
Unless you are an extrovert or already know people there you won't have any friends if you are a new student, they won't accept you into the community or school
I think the reason behind my good experience is through being highly involved. There are many opportunities if you so choose to take part in them. St. James also has college classes you are able to take through Minnesota colleges, these are very helpful, and give you more of challenging coursework.
Kids have brought guns and drugs to school multiple of times through out the years. I do not feel safe knowing that the kid behind me is caring a gun. No one is really doing anything about this serious problem. I don't feel safe walking the halls with possible serial killers. The nurse believes that an ice pack is going to solve any medical that you have and it is ridiculous!
We don't have a lot of choices. There have been days that I am still hungry after lunch is over. The food is either dripping grease, hard as a rock, under cooked, or its a mystery. The lunch ladies are rude and expect you to eat everything on your tray. I was a team player and ate lunch at school but the day I found hair in my chicken Alfredo I called it quits and started bringing my own lunch. The lunch service here is not something I recommend not even for my worst enemy.
We don't have any consciousnesses for our bad actions. Even when someone receives detention 90% don't show up and nothing happens. Our dress code is a joke, girls are being victimized. We are getting taught that we need to cover up so everyone, especially the boys, can have a good education without distractions. Bullying at St. James is a big issue, kids are getting bullied constantly and no one in the school system is doing anything to stop it.
Teachers do not care about who you are, what you live through, or if you learn the content they are trying to teach you. Most teachers solve a problem on the board and then hand you the homework, others tell you to read something and then hand you the test. Teachers here don't care if you are crying during class or why you're secretly eating your breakfast in class. There are a handful of teachers who do care and ask about your day, make sure everyone understands the material, or even buys materials to do experiments with their own money because the school system won't let the teacher use $10 to make learning a fun experience.
Living in a small community is difficult, if you don't have a well known last name you will work twice as hard to be accepted in any organization. The school doesn't fund any clubs or activities or the fine arts. Our tennis team has been going to state for the past twelve years but they don't get the recognition they deserve because the school system won't allow it.
Teachers do not care if you learn or not. We are not getting prepared for the real world. There are some teachers who work extremely hard to make a difference but the school board and the superintendent don't like change.
The school seems safe, new security systems have been installed. It just seems as drugs, alcohol, and new members to the community add to the increase pressure in the community. Which times make me think if we are really safe at school. What if one day someone comes in on drugs and have a weapon or what if someone has a final push and boom school shooting, what will happen?
School lunches has never been great or hey I love this food, but it could be worse food. School lunches at times aren't filling, they don't offer sides anymore to go with main course. Now, they just offer fruit or vegetables to eat, which times don't look appetizing at all. I could say that school lunches have in my eyes gotten "healthier," but not as filling and good.
The opportunities at school are grand and have good student involvement. All sport events are advertised and draw in not just the student body, but the community as well. The support of the fans has wandered a bit, but has succeed quite well as the years have gone by.
Most of the teachers I have had, have gone above and beyond on their teaching. They learned and earned our respect, by teaching us as a whole, yet make sure every individual gets it. They have technology become part of our education and let us become tech savvy. I have learned great studying skills with them and have learn what it is to be a great student and a great teacher.
It has a great variety, yet at times it feels like it is missing more opportunities. Most are sports concerning genders and the co-ed sports. Each sport here is fun to play, the coaches show great commitment, and great leader skills. Each person who goes through the sports at St. James high school will experience great memories and bonds that will last a lifetime. The school supports each sport and money wise the programs run good.
One thing that is both a blessing and a curse about this school is that there are no secrets. Everyone knows everyone else's business. That's bad because rumors go around quick, confrontations come around often, but in the end isn't that for the best. The fact that you have no private life has mad me need to keep my head about me, be honest, and be able to try and navigate through fact and fiction of what I hear. The environment has shaped me into the person I am today. So even though it's not the best school I don't really think I would change either.
