We have 3 of our 4 kiddos here. My oldest son refers to it as "Nerd School" like in Big Hero 6. Everyone is always working on something different. You can go through this school and earn a basic diploma but there are no AP classes because students begin free college classes as soon as they are ready offered through UCCS or Pikes Peak Community College. Students have the opportunity to earn an Associates degree alongside their High School Diploma at no cost to themselves. Students also can attend 2-3 days per week which for our children leaves more time for family since they are away from home so often with hours upon hours of Ballet or Rock Climbing team or work. If you have active and intrinsically motivated kids this is a great option. If you have the kind of kids that need constant reminders or babysat, this might not be the best option. I know as a middle school kid I would not have had the maturity to be allowed such freedom, but my kids MS&HS are thriving!
I truly loved this school. The layout of the curriculum, half in class and half online, allowed me to do school whenever I could and allowed me to begin working to save money for school. I also loved how passionate and caring all of the teachers were. It was their passion and love for teaching that helped to raise my GPA from 2.5 to 3.6 within a single school year! I will always look back on the fond memories that I had there!
One thing that I loved about Springs Studio was the college readiness aspect. I was able to take classes at a community college through them for 3 years. They paid for it and I was able to go into university with 2 full years of college credit
Springs Studio allowed me to take college classes early on in order for my to get ahead and potentially graduate with my associates degree. Springs Studio has great math teachers that help me learn very easily. Something I would like to see change is more flexibility for the students reverting back to the old model of the school.
Overall, this school is great. Most of the teachers really know what they're doing and care about helping you succeed. The high school math teachers are great people and care about their students. The art teacher is incredible and so, so encouraging, and usually doesn't care if you have a free period and want to sit in the art room for a while. Sadly, a lot of great teachers come and go at this school. Some of the years I've attended have been the absolute best because my teachers were just incredible. Other times, I would dread coming into the building for class since my teachers were miserable. In regards to the counsellors, they're part of the reason my review is only three stars. They never seem to really care about you as a person, they really only seem to care about doing their job to get paid. Interactions feel impersonal and robotic. Counselling may not be important to every student/parent when choosing a school, but I've found it to be pretty crucial.
the overall academic expectations are low. The school lacks basic organization: learning programs are changed frequently, staff changes, " off the beaten path" learning programs are chosen and staff training is poor resulting in " experimentation " rather than effective learning. School culture is non existent- no PTA, few school events that nobody shows up for, no reward system, low attendance on field trips. The school tolerates poor work ethic and instead of holding kids and parents responsible, work deadline are extended. Kids can work above grade level but there is little academic support. My child filled an entire notebook with written work and there wasn't a single correction. The teachers seem overwhelmed with the amount of work. Next school year yet another curriculum will be tested - there will be a new principal and office staff, in building schedule will be 3 days.
My school is great with working with your schedule and what you want do you past high school. I have been in their pre-collegiate program since the beginning and I love it
I attended Springs Studio for Academic Excellence my senior year of high school. I did concurrent enrollment, taking the majority of my classes at Pikes Peak Community College.
I am a senior here at Springs Studio for Academic Excellence, and just started going here this year. I absolutely love it. The teachers treat you like an actual person, not just a paycheck. If you are falling behind all the staff is there to help you figure out what needs to be done, and if you need help with the actual subjects the teacher in charge of that subject is always willing to put their time and effort into making you successful.
Springs Studio used to be a wonderful school that allowed students to complete their work at their pace while still maintaining good teacher and student relationships. Now, the teachers are absent from the programs and are only available to help on the two alloted days to go in, the school only cares about testing and receiving their money, and the curriculum is the worst that they have chosen. You learn next to nothing at this school and the only way to pass is to either switch schools or do their college program so you don't have to deal with them. This used to be a flexible ONLINE school, now they want you to come into the building for tests and to unlock quizzes. This would be great for someone who has time or lives close but for someone who is an hour away it is complete rubbish! If you want a true ONLINE school do NOT come here, they are turning into a brick and mortar school. The best thing at this school is the wonderful principle, if only all the staff were like her!
Falcon Virtual Academy was unlike any other high school I had been to, and perhaps is why I thrived in it's creative environment. Falcon Virtual Acedemy gives students the opportunity to grow on their own and move at their own pace. I was able to finish entire semester long classes in a few weeks with full comprehension of the subject being studied. This is because it is a move at your own pace environment, where micromanaging is non existent. Students are in a self propelled environment where teachers help and provide guidance on the subject, rather then strictly lecturing and old fashioned tests. I enjoyed not having set "class time" and being trusted to get things done. It also provided me with an environment where I could work full time and save for college while also being a full time high school student. The only thing I believe that makes this short of a 5 star experience is the lack of social gatherings and a truly authentic high school environment.
The academics are fabulous here. They have a wide variety of regular and honors classes as well as a partnership with a local college allowing students to get college credit in high school. It's common for students to earn a free AA here before graduation.
Even though we are a small school we have dozens of activities students can participate in. We have Student Council, National Honor and Junior Honor Society, we have the STEM club, Babysitters Club, Yearbook, Debate club, Book club, and we provide fun extra things like skate night or movie night. The leaders of all of these clubs go above and beyond and they are always lots of fun, too!
The teachers at this school are the best. They do everything in their power to make sure that you are happy and understand the material. They give extra credit and act like real people. I've never known my teachers better than I do now.
Overall, the teachers seem helpful and truly want the students to understand the material.
I do not really know what extracurriculars are offered at this school, but I do not think there are not a lot offered.
I have had a great past year at this school.
