Spokane Valley High School is a small, project based learning school. This means that we get to have more field trips and hands on learning, but that also means we sacrifice some of the givens of larger high schools. We don't have enough students or teachers to make AP or Honors classes worthwhile, and the same goes for sports and clubs. We are living under the wing of West Valley High School, however, so if clubs and sports interest you you're always welcome to go there after school. With that being said, we are very involved in our community and participate in events like Valley Fest. We are almost constantly involved in some sort of community service, and what you learn in class is always applicable to everyday life. The small school setting (we have just over 100 kids) allows for strong bonds between students and plenty of one-on-one time with the teachers so you can ensure you are getting a quality education. I love it!

What I liked about the high school is its flexibility; I was able to pursue my own study interests (mostly in philosophy and theology). However, the school is too flexible. While I was able to take advantage of it for my own academic improvement, the teachers assigned little work compared to other high schools in the area and were far to lax about collecting classwork and homework. If you turn an essay a week late, that's fine. This is hardly a good procedure for teaching, or for preparing students for real life, where if you have a job, you have to have it done or else. So they do a disservice to many, perhaps most, students.
I really enjoyed my time at this school. Project based classes were my favorite ones there and really helped me understand real world problems. There were not a lot of clubs or sports available when I was attending but I felt that there was still plenty to do and I could participate in the clubs at West Valley High School so there were still options. While having the homework done in class was helpful it did not prepare me for the homework load I would have in college so I would not say I was very prepared for that portion of life, but the class work did prepare me intellectually for college.
