The teachers really care about the education of every student, and offer many educational benefits such as tutoring, assistance with applying for college, online, dual credit, and AP college courses. However, the staff does not always care about the student's well-being. When conflict arises, the easiest solution is sought, which isn't always helpful. For instance, when the online app YikYak went viral, online bullying and harassment plagued the school. The school's solution was to send out an email to every student urging for them to simply ignore the cruel app, instead of taking action to solve the actual problem.
Southwestern High School is average in terms of academics and extracurriculars. It is lacking in good student-staff relations. The counselors seem reluctant to do their jobs and most of the teachers are disorganized at best and ineffective at worst. The library is okay and the technology available to students is up to date. The administrative staff seems to have a hard time dealing with troublesome students and the school has had repeated incidents of students threatening others and the school in general. The schools has dealt with these threats by sweeping them under the rug. Many times the school has not released statements to the parents regarding the incidents.
As a current senior at Southwestern High School, I have seen many new faces, whether they be students or teachers. Overall, my time at Southwestern has been incredibly memorable and enjoyable. Most teachers show their care and passion for their jobs. Most administration show respect and care for all students. Facilities such as the cafeteria and bathrooms are kept very clean and tidy by janitors, but become gross once students use the areas. As a music student, I have found much pleasure in the music teachers and teaching styles, specifically the band directors. Diversity is lacking at Southwestern, but I can see we have become a more diverse school year after year, which is something every school should strive for. All in all, Southwestern is a growing community of many different people from differing walks of life. I can truly say my four years at Southwestern have been some of the most memorable of my life.
