Southwest Senior High School offers a one-of-a-kind experience to all of those who become part of the Southwest High School community. The capability of the students is syrupy underestimated, as the school resides so close to the US-Mexico border. The diverse ethnicities across the campus give you insight on what the culture shock of a college campus feels like. Also, the teachers are always available to help the students. Many offer tutoring almost every day, work on Saturdays, and connect their students to scholarships like this one! Southwest Senior High School has always aimed to change the conversation from “If I go to college,” to “When I go to college,” for their mainly minority student body.

What I like about Southwest is that there is many opportunities for students to express themselves, whether it be with an elective or an after school program. There’s also a very good school culture, we may not be super connected, but we can feel for one another and stand up for each other when needed. What could be better about Southwest is the administration and how they handle many situations. For example, the way they take more into account when there’s girls who are not following dress code, instead of them trying to help out students who are struggling with classes that might have a deeper issue that is causing them to be so unmotivated. I also believe the administration think they need to be “bad cops” with everything, when it’s not true. When the administration is able to have fun, its a way better chance to get the children to enjoy their high school experience.
In my excellent experience, Southwest Senior High School would be considered a school of growth; physically, mentally and even spiritually. The school itself was known for a bad reputation of students constantly fighting and bullying. However, that began to change when teachers, staffs, and students had enough and worked for a change. Then Southwest High became a safe place where students, teachers, and staffs began to grow for a purpose to help others to succeed with the rest along the way. In Southwest High, we believe that if you want to go fast go alone, but if you want to far go with a team; that is what Southwest High School has been remembered for. Unfortunately, this amazing school has very old books in atrocious conditions; the same applies to sports equipment and sometimes there is no equipment for the school's sports teams. These disadvantages are the reason it has taken longer for Southwest High School to grow, but it has made progres and will continue to do so.
