Like any school, experience varies according to the quality of teaching. Southside attracts top-notch teachers. My 4th grader has had excellent teachers all the way through with the exception of one bad apple, who wasn't terrible, but just fairly lazy and unwilling to differentiate her teaching. The school admin promptly offered us the opportunity to switch to an excellent teacher and we've had nothing but excellent teachers since.

Southside offers an idyllic and charming environment.. I imagine our son will have very fond memories of the charming old building, lovely open and vegetated courtyard, open playground and fabulous school garden which they pass multiple times/day to/from classes.

Southside is in a high-income area of town. With the wealth, comes a good bit of attention to status, both material and academic. By academic, I refer to the ability and willingness of many Southside families to essentially purchase a "gifted" academic track for their children. There is a pervasive misconception at Southside that "gifted-certified" equates with "better teacher." The downside to this is that for those students who truly need more academic challenge, they are placed with less advanced students in gifted classes and the teachers must accommodate their needs, thereby preventing any truly advanced or accelerated curriculum from being offered. Fortunately, Common Core is requiring more advanced grade-level curriculum, increasing the challenge level for everyone.

Southside has a lot of well-to-do stay-at-home mom's ever present at school, in the PTO, raising funds and organizing fabulous events and programs, such as dance, drama and a truly wonderful school garden. While there is very little ethnic or economic diversity at Southside (a big downside), the school offers an almost nostalgic setting and energy, just a warm and nurturing primary school experience with highly motivated teachers to hopefully send them off to middle school as inspired learners.

We've had 2 emergency evacuations thus far in our time at Southside. Last year it was a gas leak under the road in front of the school. By the time parents were notified, the students had already been moved by bus to the nearby middle school, where we were invited to come sign them out. It was very controlled, very well organized, which helped me deal with this year's emergency - a bomb threat. We've never received details, but rumors were that it was a kid that called the school and that while there was serious doubt as to the credibility of the threat, they had to respond as if it was a high threat. All students were quickly evacuated. Evacuations are color-coded, so the students were not evacuating with fear of a bomb. The entire situation was handled very well, with all students returning to classrooms and a school-wide attendance taken before anyone was released for dismissal. Both events have given us confidence in the school admin and the city officials' abilities to handle these emergencies and keep our children safe.
The principal lacks social skills but seems to make a great school captain in other regards. He has hired a fair number of teachers since becoming principal, and they seem to be highly qualified almost across the board (with the exception of the new art teacher). The principal places high priority on the arts, sometimes too much when school play rehearsals happen during learning time and teachers have to put teaching on hold due to large number of students gone to rehearsals. A number of teachers were upset about this, so it will hopefully change as of this year by moving rehearsals to after school hours. I haven't had a lot of interaction with the admin, but for example, when we were unhappy with a teacher, they quickly offered us the option of switching teachers. We were very pleased with the outcome. No controversial policies that we've come in contact with.
