Coming to south my freshman year i didn’t know what to expect. The first thing i was talked to about was about college and i was confused at first thinking, it’s my freshman year and they want me to start planning for college? that’s crazy! Now that it is my senior year , I have a more understanding on why they said the things my freshman year that they did. If it wasn’t for the many amazing staff members at South that helped not only me, but the many other students they helped prepare for college. Personally i don’t think i would be this prepared and well aware of what i want to peruse in my future if it wasn’t for their hard work and dedication.

South Salem High School offers the international baccalaureate (IB) program, which is a rigorous international academic program. I really enjoy this because students are taught a higher level of thinking and learn about important global issues. There is quite a bit of homework but it is not busywork and the courses are rigorous and interesting, with passionate teachers who care about their student success. Within the IB Program, I’ve generally found people to be accepting of diversity, and at South generally this is true to some extent – there is a Gay Straight Alliance, a Latino club, and other organizations like that.
I chose to attend South Salem as opposed to the high school I live near because of the opportunity for higher academic challenges through the International Baccaleaureate Program. I have not been disappointed in the level of excellent instruction, opportunities for leadership, collaborative learning and volunteer opportunities South Salem has provided. I have been supported and encouraged all along the way, and as a senior feel ready for the next step - college!
