When I was in 9th grade, I was tested for learning disability and found out I have dyslexia. Having been born in Ethiopia and moved to the U.S. at eight, I was already an English as a Second Language Learner. Being both dyslexia and an English as a Second Language student was a frustrating combination as it meant my school work took me many hours to finish. Luckily, I was supported by all my teachers, counselors and administration team at South Eugene High School. When I entered high school, I was put on a 504 plan which gave me accommodations (such as extra time on tests and quizes) and enabled my teachers to better support me, all which was really useful when I started taking AP and IB classes.
As a Senior, I feel I was consistently supported by my teachers, counselors, and administration team throughout high school. South Eugene High School gave me an excellent education and provided me with all the resources I needed to make my high school experience smooth and beneficial.

South Eugene is a magnet school for wealthy and educated families in the area but has a diverse socioeconomic makeup nonetheless. The teachers and classes are academically robust, and there are many opportunities for college preparation and taking college classes for credit. One advantage of this school is its proximity to the University of Oregon, which allows for part time university enrollment. The school has some issues with diversity as it is majority white, and the wealthy makeup leads to some issues of perspective. The school does not always make minority inclusion and equity a priority. The counselors have so many students that they are spread thin, and the same goes for the administration. That said, it’s a good school if you want a rigorous education and access to many clubs and activities.
South offers a wide variety of traditional academic classes but also ones that teach skills that are directly related to a future career like computer programming and catering.

School spirit and athletics are not things South has been traditionally known for but what is there should be enough to satisfy any student who isn't specifically looking for that.

The teachers are generally knowledgeable and friendly, with most having their own unique teaching style.
