South Eugene is a great school with good academics and an experienced and talented faculty. Though the building itself lacks some comfort, this is made up by the welcoming feeling that the staff provide to every student, regardless of their background, race, sexual orientation, or gender. South also ranks highly in sports, hosting many teams that consistently place highly in district and state events. South is a well-rounded school that expects top effort from all of its students without putting too much pressure on them.
I think South is a lot better than most high schools but there is definitely room for improvement. There tends to be this elitism among students and staff, a belief that South Eugene is superior to everywhere else. This is especially evident in the more wealthy students. Because of this, there is a lack of cooperation and community building. Yes, we have a lot of resources, but that doesn't make us better than anyone else. There is also an unhealthy competitive nature, a pressure to be the best or else you fail entirely. A lack of diversity is evident as well. However, I can see change beginning in this school which gives me hope for future students. I would be lying if I said some classes weren't really beneficial.
The teachers here are so accommodating to people's specific learning needs. As an IHS student I feel that although the course-load can be very stressful, they do as much as they can to ease the tension and provide us with guidance. I love the collaboration aspect and the high density of group projects. The school has a bit of an organizational inconsistency but other than that it's a great school.
