Being the sole female drum major in the South Brunswick Viking Marching Band has been a challenging experience. While I heard stories about female leaders encountering obstacles in various fields, I never expected to experience them at such a young age. I assumed that as I grew older and took on a leadership position, I would be accepted for my capabilities rather than doubted because of my gender. It was shocking to see stereotypes influencing not only the young men in my community but also young women who should empathize with those facing the same hardships they may encounter later on. Throughout the season, I have consistently been doubted for having this position. At times, these actions made me question my abilities. However, I realized the need to be resilient and embody the change I wanted to see in my band. My goal is not only to foster greater acceptance of female leaders within my band but also to inspire future female leaders to accept it gracefully.
Most of the issues at SBHS are issues of culture. The school itself is well funded and works well.
1) Hypercompetitive Culture
While a lot of the facilities of SBHS are well kept, the teachers and the education being excellent, there is still an issue of students constantly wanting better and better grades, harder and harder classes. Students constantly talk about it, compare themselves and insult each other for being 'stupid' or not doing enough. The mental health facilities at the school are lacking, so these issues are never really resolved.
2) Discrimination
Racism and homophobia are very prevalent issues. Racism being the heaviest, with many non-South Asian students feeling isolated, and hall monitors being discriminatory against Black students. Slurs, and other such forms of racism are rampant within student and staff but are never fully addressed. Homophobia also creates isolation, with many students who are openly LGBTQ being excluded or otherwise harrased.

I think being a high school student at this school is amazing. The diversity pool at the school is great too, which means you can meet different people and form lasting friendships. Academically, the school is challenging, but that only means that students are pushed to a higher level in order to succeed. The school does a good job of being aware of mental health and other tolls that a rigorous course may have on students, although I would like to see more efforts towards this.
