Somonauk High School is a small school so community is important and everyone knows everyone. If you need help then there is something for everyone. Teachers are very involved in your academic success and due to the small class size there is a lot of opportunity for one-on-one academic aid. The sad thing about it being a small school is that the options for study and extracurricular is very limited so you can't advance in certain areas of study as much as a larger school might. Due to the teacher shortage there has been recent issues with the math department for example the AP Statistics teacher, despite the whole AP test being done with calculator, is yet to teach the students how to do any of the problems with their calculator. This has caused the class to be severely and extremely unprepared for the upcoming test. We are also a very secure school so students aren't let in the hallway with out passes and the doors are regularly checked to be closed and locked by a staff member.
I quite like my school. Teachers that take an active interest in students' lives aren't a rare occurrence here; I'm positive that if I told all of my teachers that I was doing something exciting over the weekend, they'd all follow up the following Monday to ask me how it went. The classes are good, but I feel that the courses offered are a little lacking. I'd like to have taken more AP classes through the school, but only five are offered. In addition to that, I wish there were more performing arts classes or classes involving music. We only gained a back a choir a few years ago, and without that there was only Band. Students here are becoming less motivated to stay involved, but there's a decent sized group of people trying to keep certain clubs and activities afloat. Even through the pandemic I've enjoyed my time here, and I'll be sad to leave once I graduate.
I love the “small town school” feel, but with that there are limited opportunities. These limits includes athletics, extracurricular, and teachers. While this may not be an easy thing to change, I believe that effort can at least be put in to try to change this situation. Other than that, I have enjoyed my time at Somonauk High School and recommend it to anyone planning on attending.
