The teachers are great and are truly interested in the students’ success in school. Although, the counselors could do better at dealing with issues and problems among and between students. Also, the school is being renovated and adding new buildings, and it looks great!
Overall my experience at Somerville high school was a combination of mixed emotions, school under constructions but friends and friendly teachers to greet you every school day. Somerville high always tried to keep a positive environment of what was left of the high school. Being a senior at Somerville high it was quite difficult and upsetting due to being in the middle of construction, events were canceled or rearranged to try to fulfill senior traditions but nothing was perfect for the class of 2020. Throughout senior year it seemed to be one problem after another not only was the school literally falling apart at it’s seams, and barely enough money fund raised to have a prom a horrible virus called “Covid-19” distributed all events like prom, Graduation and even finishing my last year of high school. My senior year literally vanished right in front of my own eyes in the matter of days which was difficult to adjust to.
Somerville High School is an amazing school. It allowed me to embrace my skin and hair as Black Women. I was able to see young Black women wear their curls, coils, and kinks out freely. Which inspired me to go natural. I was then introduced to Black friends which led me to clubs such as The Black Student Union. Through making relations and becoming more involved in my community, I became a leader within my school community. Although they are some equity problems within Somerville High School. Some employees do not know how to interact and develop meaningful relationships with students of color. We have had multiple incidents where security guards have policed students of color. We've also had faculty members openly use the n-word in front of a Black African American student. How can a school brag about diversity and not support the student that brings that significant factor?
