I can honestly say that I am fortunate to have attended Smithtown High School West. The dedication of the teachers and administration has provided me and my fellow students a supportive and stimulating place to grow as students and people. The vast choices of classes to take and the incredible teachers have truly prepared me for college. The most enjoyable and memorable parts of my High School are the numerous extra curricular activities and sports I have been able to be a part of. In particular our music program is top notch and has allowed me to find camaraderie, confidence and passion for something that has become a central part of my life. Despite these wonderful aspects of my school I do wish that our student body showed more school spirit and support for one another. There are certain events that a large part of the student body gets excited about such as football games but wish it was expanded to not as popular events like our drama and music events.
The overall experience was okay. We have a wide variety of AP courses, but much of the material has been diluted in quality due to the district’s ‘Challenge by Choice’ policy (that allows anyone to sign up for an AP class). However, I’ve had a couple of great teachers who truly pushed me with a rigorous academic climate despite these flawed policies. I was very fortunate to have a lovely, helpful guidance counselor, but the department as a whole is lacking. This is evident when counselors fail to answer simple questions about how the GPA system works, neglect to tell students about mid-year reports, or inform students about what early-decision is. The college placement is subpar as a result. Also, the music department is woefully underfunded when compared to athletics. The music stands are all rusting, but it’s okay because the football team (that consistently loses) has a new turf when the old turf was fine.
The teachers, counselors, administrators, and staff members have been extremely helpful in resolving any issue that may come up. They whole-heartedly work with us to assist us with any problematic situation that may arise, keeping safety at the forefront of their priorities. They exhibit a sincere concern for our well-being, in all aspects, physically, emotionally, as we as academically.
The school offers a lot of AP and honors courses, as well as extracurricular activities and sports. This starts from 8th grade, where they offer an "advanced" track by taking 9th grade Algebra. They also offer PLTW (Project Lead The Way) for students who do not wish to take the advanced track. This latter option still offers fun and exciting ways to experience, partake in, and learn STEM courses and activities.
The district is a large district with many schools and very different needs, so it is more challenging to accomplish this, but they do their best to help students be the best they can be.
