The school is less than 500 students with only two classes per grade, which creates a truly intimate feeling. By the middle grades the kids know almost all the other kids in their grade as well as kids from adjacent grades. Skinner North is a classical school and so of course teaches an advanced academic curriculum. But the thing that makes it unique is the care many of the teachers put into differentiation. There is a clear effort to nurture the interests and abilities of the specific child. As a result, it's an excellent school with LOVELY teachers.
Our experience was fine until 4th grade. Quality of teachers and academics dropped. Academic growth scores are dropping. School is spending resources helping the academically challenged students and ignoring the needs of the top kids. No Spanish. Music is too easy. Parent cars are broken into. Nice green space. Park district pool beside school. Target across the street (although there was a shooting incident there recently). Traffic around school from all directions can pose long delays during drop off and pickup. Support staff are very nice. The school supports student initiative and leadership opportunities. Although, some students are given too much authority and feel like they and their parents run the school lending to a growing and serious bullying problem. Administration does not address individual bullying incidents. We have never heard of any student being reprimanded for anything in all of our years. Apply to gifted centers with SN classical as a backup.
I have two children currently at Skinner North. It is by far one of the best elementary schools in the city. My children have been challenged academically year after year. Their teachers and administrators are amazing. They are kind and caring and always looking out for all their students. They always make me feel welcome when I walk into the school and know every child by name (Administration). Being born and bred in Chicago, the neighborhood has changed dramatically, for the better, in the past several years. Drop off and pickup are a breeze if you use the Target parking lot as opposed to the lot across the street from the school. My children feels safe walking over from the school to Target (with parental permission) to wait for me. In my experience, teachers always communicate with me about my children and will go above and beyond to make sure they are successful in everything they do.
