Skinner is an amazing school. It attracts students from across the city into the classical program and turns those kids into superstar students. The top cohort of students runs 1-2 years ahead. The results are compelling: for students starting in Whitney Young's academic center (the top, early-entry cohort for WY), Skinner regularly sends 15-20 kids -- consistently more than any other school in Chicago. Then consider that some of the kids come from neighborhoods and backgrounds where they do not have every advantage (or even a stable home to live in). That Skinner achieves all of this and creates an environment where there is little bullying, where school is celebrated, and where kids can focus on learning and playing... that is nothing short of amazing. My only complaint: student concerts could take far longer than scheduled. THAT is my only complaint -- which should tell you how pleased I was with the school.
Skinner West is an incredible school, the teachers there are phenomenal and the learning environment is well fit to a student who wants to do his/her best to learn everything they can. The majority of the kids I know at SW are all literally 99th%ile in both reading and math. It is a great middle school for those who want to get into a selective enrollment HS.
Skinner West is very diverse and with high-caliber students. My years here were incredibly enjoyable with the tight-knit classes and wonderful park we hung at during lunch and after school.
