Signal Mountain Middle/High School is a stellar. They have an engaged faculty and wonderful facilities to make sure each student is receiving a well rounded education. The teachers make learning accessible to all students; since the teacher student ratio is high, this allows the teacher to cater to each and every student. They provide a program called International Baccalaureate and it allows candidates to gain a worldly perspective. This program challenges students to their fullest academic expression as it is extremely rigorous. If you're not in this program, students have access to collegiate level classes with highly qualified professors. This school is combined middle and high school, allowing for lasting friendships to be made. Living in this area, I could not recommend a better school.
It has a very warm and welcoming atmosphere, and most of the teachers are fantastic people who clearly value their students above all else. The academics are competitive and challenging, and there are more opportunities to express oneself through sports, clubs, organizations, etc. than one can imagine. Student voice is very important to everyone at the school, and the staff typically listen and care about whatever a student has to say. The school opened up a lot of doors for me, and it shaped me into a very well-rounded and focused student. That being said, there are some downsides. The lack of diversity in the student body and staff is offputting, to say the least, and there are sometimes communication breakdowns, with some members of the administration, and that can be incredibly frustrating for students if they need an issue fixed quickly and cleanly. Other than a few quirks in the system, the school is incredible and has incredible opportunities that go along with it.
A lot of the reviews on here seem to come from parents of SMMHS students rather than the students themselves. As a recent graduate of SMMHS, I found the school offered reputable academics if you were willing to do IB; which arguably has more drawbacks than benefits depending on what you desire in a high school education. Otherwise, the standard level courses are mere jokes that consist of directionless busy work and primarily apathetic teachers. The student body is almost entirely upper/upper-middle class white kids (Which is fine), but if you want yourself or your child to meet people of different races, ethnicities, and cultures, SMMHS is simply the wrong school. We excelled in some sports and performed woefully in others. There is a variety of extracurricular activities students can utilize, and I almost always felt safe while on school property. All things considered, it is a good public school, but as a former student, I consider SMMHS somewhat overrated.
