Attending Shrewsbury High School is not a unique experience, it's a means to an end. Like any other school, it has strengths and weaknesses. Some teachers are amazing, some classes are constantly engaging; some teachers probably should've considered a different profession, and some classes make it a struggle not to fall asleep. Our school is very academically focused and mainly directs attention towards gifted students rather than those who need help. The environment of the students can be very toxic due to the general pressure to pursue a stem related field. Pursuing the arts or humanities is generally not supported. The school mainly directs its money towards sports, leaving most other clubs poorly organized and less popular. The town of Shrewsbury is generally well off, which contributes to pressure of students to go to prestigious colleges and be successful monetary wise. The student population is diverse, but doesn't address it, and the staff is not diverse at all.
My time at Shrewsbury High School served as an awakening. As a child I knew I would be clothed, fed, and sent to college. Almost everyone at Shrewsbury High School was in the same boat. Students drove their own cars to school, or could trust that a bus would be able to reach their neighborhood. Shrewsbury High School is the definition of privilege. They provide a dense course load, steering clear of controversial topics, but always preaching diversity in a predominantly white town. It took moving away from this town to truly recognize this. I wish something- or someone opened my eyes to my privilege sooner. As the classes became more diverse over my high school career, there was an uproar in racism, antisemitism, sexism, homophobia, etc. I hope that my picket fence home town can learn to be honest with their students, have the “hard” discussions, and call it when they see it for a lack of better terms. The world is changing and it is time they do the same.
In terms of academics, Shrewsbury was ahead of all the other schools in the area. There was a clear focus on learning and strict regulations to help facilitate this. Other schools in the area were much more lenient, resulting in the ability for the students to easily "slip through the cracks". The regulations regarding a student's class load made sure that the student was receiving an interdisciplinary education, whilst also enabling them to learn in-depth about the topics they were interested in. An extremely good choice of school.
