Sherwood Githens Middle School Reviews

Academically, I liked that there was a program for talented math students to move up into more advanced classes. However, I noticed that the students who moved up were generally those with more involved parents, and I think that an important change that could be made would be to listen to student's requests to be moved up if they feel that they are ready. I would love to see changes implemented to the dress code and the quality and treatment of the teachers. Due to North Carolina's extremely low pay rate and funding to schools and teachers, many didn't stay for longer than a year and most were not the best. The dress code was, to my knowledge, mandated by Durham Public Schools, the school system that Githens falls under, but the enforcement of it varies from school to school. It was almost always girls who were targeted for breaking the dress code, and predominantly black girls. I believe that these problems have much deeper roots than Githens, but change does need to start somewhere.
