From Sheridan School

A joyful and spirited place, Sheridan School is a learning community where we expect our students to achieve great things . . . and they do.

We intentionally develop in students an authentic desire to learn, to frame questions, to seek answers, to lead, to explore, and to create.

Challenge at Sheridan is not limited to the classroom. Our 130-acre Mountain Campus provides students with an opportunity to move outside the comfort of their regular surroundings and experience new levels of challenge in nature—a perspective that plays a vital role in developing confidence and character.

Our oldest tradition? Kindness. The sense of welcoming and warmth you feel upon walking through our doors has been at the heart of our school since its founding in 1927.

Without a doubt, Sheridan is the best investment we have ever made for our family. Our daughters attended K-8th grade. I was not previously familiar with the progressive education model, but after seeing its impact, I am a believer. The compassionate, humane instruction belies the curriculum’s rigor and efficacy. Sheridan graduates are the smartest, most thoughtful, articulate young adults I have ever met. Students leave Sheridan not only well prepared for even DC’s most rigorous high-schools, but prepared to be community leaders. They are curious, kind and well rounded. At Sheridan’s Mountain Campus students learn about the natural world, environmental education, teamwork, science, and risk taking. Students have opportunities to play on numerous school sports teams. An exceptional arts program enhances and supports the other classroom curriculum and invites student to stretch themselves - to be bold and brave and have fun doing it.

My sons attended Sheridan from K-8th grade. Our boys were always happy and joyful Sheridan students, they made lifelong friends at Sheridan and graduated prepared for high school. As we get ready to drop our oldest off for his Freshman year in college, we have reflected a lot about his Sheridan years. And my younger son is a rising senior in high school. At this significant milestone in educating our boys, the nine years at Sheridan has served them both very well. Academically, both boys have handled the stress and challenges of high school with confidence and an understanding that mistakes and challenges are where the true learning happens. We know they are now also prepared for college. We love Sheridan and highly recommend this outstanding school.
I like the following things about Sheridan School:
1)The teacher to student ratio also lends itself to teacher efficacy. There are a high number of teachers to students allowing for more differentiated student learning.
    2) Sheridan's students learn to love learning and knowledge because the faculty and staff are supported in their work.
    3) Integrity, compassion and respect underpin all of the social emotional learning that takes place in Sheridan's responsive classrooms.
    4) Sheridan is dedicated to teaching its students where they are and raising them up from wherever they may be found.
    5) Sheridan is committed to the safety -- both physical and social emotional safety -- of its students. This takes the form of active anti-bullying and restorative-justice based conflict resolution measures.
    6) We think that the K-8 model coupled with a progressive educational ethos is a great fit. Students are given ample opportunities beginning at a young age to be leaders.
