My experience at Sheldon High School was really good! It felt like a very diverse school with so many different opportunities in sports, clubs, and extracurricular activities. And the students and staff are great! A good place to learn and get ready for the next steps into whatever path you want to follow after high school.
Students are ill-prepared for college, with an absence of classes that prepare students for life away from home, as well as a lack of more challenging classes. The total amount of AP classes is very small, only including APUSH, 2 AP language classes, AP Bio, AP Calculus, and AP Lit. The only other options for an AP-adjacent experience are College-Now classes, which aren't very difficult and are not recognized as honors classes outside the state of Oregon. The scheduling system at Sheldon is honestly atrocious. We do not have enough staff to maintain the schedules of all of our students, which leads to restrictions on schedule changes, even though scheduling mistakes are frequent. This staff shortage applies to other branches of the school. It is difficult to contact or get the attention of staff for real problems because they are so overloaded with work.
I think one of Sheldon’s strongest points is its teachers, as I’ve really enjoyed most of mine. The fact that they have the IHS program is wonderful and made my time much better. The issues I have are mainly with the environment. The school is very dark and gloomy with few windows and a lot of the students can create a bad environment. In addition it is a heavily sports, specifically football, focused school which as someone in the arts can be a bit disappointed even though I enjoy sports as well. Overall I think the education I got was really good, specially because of the IHS/IB program.
