There are a lot of good qualities about Shawnee Mission West. For example, the teaching staff. At my old middle school I would sometimes have to deal with teachers who lectured us and didn't necessarily care if we understood what we were "learning". However at Shawnee Mission West we received an entirely different method of teaching. At Shawnee Mission West the teachers really cared about what they were teaching. They also very much cared that their students understood what they were teaching. If there were any students who didn't understand they would take time to personally meet with that student and further explain what they were teaching. This is a very good quality that every school should have. Even though there are some great things about the school there are some things that I wish that they would change. For example, the separation of the students. Whenever they divide the students into classes it seems to me that they separate the minorities from the non-minorities.

Great school overall. I feel very prepared for college. There are many different clubs and activities offered at this great with great sponsors who care about their students. Personally, I participated in gymnastics and there were not a lot of participants. This led the district to hold a district meeting about potentially cutting the sport. I feel that small sport like gymnastics in this district is not represented as well as sports like football. In addition, there are many honor and advanced courses to choose from.
Teachers at Shawnee Mission West are fantastic. They care about your learning as well as retention. Our councilors also are constantly building relationships with each student. This year we have a new college advisor and even with it being so early in the academic year, he has reached out to all seniors about meeting with him. Our school is the most diverse in the district which allows a great culture. Overall, West is a positive place for learning and building connections.
