There are a lot of good qualities about Shawnee Mission West. For example, the teaching staff. At my old middle school I would sometimes have to deal with teachers who lectured us and didn't necessarily care if we understood what we were "learning". However at Shawnee Mission West we received an entirely different method of teaching. At Shawnee Mission West the teachers really cared about what they were teaching. They also very much cared that their students understood what they were teaching. If there were any students who didn't understand they would take time to personally meet with that student and further explain what they were teaching. This is a very good quality that every school should have. Even though there are some great things about the school there are some things that I wish that they would change. For example, the separation of the students. Whenever they divide the students into classes it seems to me that they separate the minorities from the non-minorities.

It's a great school with such amazing teachers! I joined in the middle of the year and I always had someone to sit by at lunch and my teachers would call my parents telling them how great of a student I was, which was really motivating. Although West doesn't have the best facilities, they are trying and what they lack in physical appearance they make up for in character and education quality. If you want to really learn something take the AP courses because they're worth it.
Shawnee Mission was one of the brightest spots in my entire schooling career. I gained tons of knowledge there and even more. It gave me leadership skills, made me more enterprising and organized. I liked the friendly atmosphere and the teachers. They have a such a big choice of extracurricular activities available for all SMW students. I was actively involved in Cross Country, Track and Field, College Ambassador Program, International Club, Multicultural Leadership Club, as well as did a lot of volunteering as a part of FCCLA. I wouldn't like to see anything change since I enjoyed it the way it was.
