I love it because they are so outgoing and have so much school spirit! The staff are some of the most amazing teachers I’ve ever had and even the officers, and janitors have been so good to the students of south. Ido think they need to relax on some rules. I feel as though times are changing and teenaged are a lot different now. I believe students should be able to leave for lunch no matter what grade, especially considering covid circumstances.
Shawnee Mission South isn't a bad school by any means. On a nationwide level, I imagine it's easily well above average. If you take the AP classes, the teachers and curriculum will be of good quality. There's also a decent amount of opportunities to get involved in activities. However, I think the college preparedness area could be improved. The counselors are nice and provide resources for secondary education as a whole, but there isn't really any emphasis on applying to out-of-state colleges. It seems like there's a lack of knowledge/support for applying to competitive colleges, compared to the focus that's placed upon applying to community colleges and state schools. If you want to have a competitive application, you're largely left on your own to figure out what that means and how to do it. I understand that there's a big range of post-high school plans for students at South, but I'd like to see more support from the counseling area. Otherwise, I have no complaints about South.
Shawnee Mission South is a fantastic place! It has a diverse, inclusive culture that supports all student interests and activities. Teachers care more about then supplying curriculum; they are actively invested in student success!
