Getting involved in Shawnee Mission South has by far been my favorite thing about high school. Not only have I met my best friends but I can consistently learning skills I can use later in life. I can currently the Company Manager of Reparatory Theatre, a cadet teacher for our special education program (PLS), I was the captain of the JV soccer team in spring 2019, and I am also involved in other smaller clubs. Each of these has given me leadership skills that I couldn't have gotten any other way. And not only that, being so involved has created me to be more out going with my school work. I am more confident when talking to teachers and asking for help!

This school provided me with so many opportunities. The arts programs are absolutely stellar, and they allowed me to participate at the highest level in both choir and band. They also provide numerous involvement activities, including sports, many clubs, and student leadership. I was able to take classes in my chosen field - computer science - every single year! They maintain a wonderful engineering program and give individualized levels of challenge to each student. Overall, I’d highly recommend this school!
Shawnee Mission South used to be among the best schools as did the Shawnee Mission School District. Blue Valley has easily passed them and Olathe has caught up to them. The culture at South is very troubling as the majority of students binge drink and smoke marijuana on the weekends. The students overall somewhat overachieve academically. There tend to be girl fights between the minority students and it's not unusual to smell marijuana on many students after lunch.

Extra-curricular activities vary. The theater program remains strong as it is the same director who has produced some Hollywood talent such as Rob Riggle. The sports program is fairly "sick" as the AD hires his buddies and there's no motivation for the coaches to perform. This is especially true in the baseball program where they haven't had a winning season in over a decade, players regularly quit before varsity season because of political coaching.
