Shawnee Mission Northwest was a great high school experience. The school spirit was phenomenal, people were friendly, and teacher's were supported. The school tried its best to make all kinds of events unique and fun. And there was so much diversity in the opportunities you could pursue!

SMNW HS has been a great place with great educators and opportunities for my 3 children. Parent involvement is high. I would like to see more effort on the part of the school counselors in reaching out to students who are uninvolved in extra curricular activities or struggling with academics offering to provide assistance or find out if they could be of assistance. They seem to wait for students and/or parents to reach out without being proactive. Also the district administration has been very politically motivated and lacking in character in their spending of funds, upping their own salaries, appointing positions to "friends/connections" rather than better qualified candidates often causing forced retirement and displacement of tenured staff.
I like the various classes and courses available, many of which are college now or college preparedness classes. The school is fairly diverse, with kids from all different types of backgrounds, and there are numerous clubs and sports offered. The staff is fairly nice and a lot of them have been teaching at this school for long periods of time. The school has a zero-tolerance policy on bullying and the staff usually handles complaints of bullying very well. Overall, I am very lucky to have been able to go to such a good school with such nice staff and a diverse group of students.
