When I did not perform well in the traditional high school setting, Shabazz, which offers an alternative learning program, provided me with a safe place where I can grow and gain comprehensive academic skills. It is a small school, comprised of a little over 120 students each year. This makes class sizes smaller and allows a personal connection with each teacher. Students are treated as equals, and we are built around being a community. Our policies and values ensure safety and respect to all students. We welcome many LGBTQ+ students, but we unfortunately have very little racial diversity. Lastly, Shabazz issues pass/fail grades instead of a GPA. At the end of each quarter, all students write narrative evaluations to assess ourselves on how well we performed during each class. This takes stress off students by allowing us to focus on our education, and not how we look as a number on a spreadsheet. Shabazz has helped me become a leader, an activist, and a happier human being.
