i like everything about this school. The teachers, the food, thire service and they also have agreat costmer service.
There is good security throughout the whole school. There is a code that students and teacher have to unlock doors because the outside doors are always locked. There are adults that watch(and play with!) kids during recess to ensure safety. SCDS raises a lot of awareness about bullying and personal safety throughout all the grades. From a young age the students are taught and encourages to be allies for people. For PE in 7th and 8th grade the students go off campus. For one semester the students go to a self defense class twice a week. Students take health classes all 9 years. They are taught about different illnesses, bullying, smoking, and basic drug information(how to say no, etc.) in Kindergarten-4th grade and in 5th-8th grade start going in depth about drugs and sex-ed. This school is very safe and teaches the students personal safety for the future.
There are a lot of extracurriculars to choose from. The most popular one is Ultimate Frisbee. A good chunk of the students play and it is a big part of the community at SCDS. There is after school care that is so fun for all the kids. There are a lot of activities for everybody.
This school changed my life. I love everything about this magical place. Someone once told me that SCDS gives you an "appetite for wonder". I have never found better words to describe this school. My classmates were my best friends because of the tight knit community that is built at this school. There is nothing more comforting than being surrounded by like-minded people who share she same love of learning as you do. Since SCDS, to this day, I have never been able to find a group of people like. My favorite memories and experiences happened among my teachers and fellow students. In middle school, the advisories are mixed grades which gives each person a chance to mentor and to be mentored. Class trips start in 4th grade with a one night stay at a camp on Vashon Island. From 4th grade through 8th grade the trips get longer and you travel further. In 8th grade, the trip is international(every year it is to a different place). Traveling international with my best friends and favorite teachers was an experience of a lifetime. The trip is tied into the 8th grade curriculum and your time at SCDS is capped of with a big project related to the trip that your class goes on. SCDS is truly one of my favorite places. I spent the best 9 years of my life at SCDS and I wouldn't trade it for the world.
They are so great. You don't feel like the teachers think they are superior to the students. They help students arrive to conclusions for the difficult and thought-provoking questions that are asked. Teachers let the students steer the class to a certain extent. The teachers are so fun and really understand the students and the environment that they need. The teacher is rarely the main focus of the class. They are there to guide the students through discussions and send students down paths of exploration.
