Alum: Manual was overall a great school! I was in the Visual Arts magnet and I felt like it really improved my skills. I felt challenged by my studies but supported by teachers and peers willing to help me if I ever needed it. It had a very diverse and accepting atmosphere and I never felt afraid to be who I was at the school. My only issue throughout the entire four years I attended was that the art teachers were often too ruthless. Often times, they would pick favorites and be too cruel with critiques-- to the point where the critique wasn't constructive. I had a teacher call my art "ugly" and provide no extra details on improvement. Senior: The Gatton Academy gave me lots of opportunities and experiences that I definitely wouldn't have been able to get without it. Not only does it do a good job of preparing for college, but also supports you while you're already in it. I also really appreciate the tutors. That being said, the work/study environment can be a little toxic and sometimes even staff members contribute to this. Also, there are a lot of complaints about the required courses, since some of them don't really align with student interests. For example, if a student wants to become a computer engineer, they're still required to take biology and chemistry. While it is a STEM school, some people have proposed making career paths. Overall though, I really appreciate what this school has done for me. Being able to have free tuition and housing is a huge plus that I'm grateful for, especially as I'm applying to colleges and realizing how expensive all that stuff really is.... Read 23 reviews

Senior: Paul Laurence Dunbar High School is a great environment for high school students. The teachers care about the students and leading them to success. The faculty takes care of students who apply for free/reduced lunch and make sure they get just as many opportunities as the wealthier students at the school. One downside to Paul Laurence Dunbar High School is the amount of fights that have taken place, especially within this past year. The administrators have made sure to address these fights with consequences in order to reduce the amounts of fights at school and keep students safe. One good aspect of Paul Laurence Dunbar High School is the variety of clubs. The school has a great amount of clubs, including Dunbar Culture Society, FCCLA, Senior Executive Board, and so much more. Niche User: Our overall experience with this school has been wonderful. I have found MES to be such a nurturing school for my son. He has blossomed academically and socially. The teachers are top-notch and some of the best out there. The administration is transparent, welcoming and always deals with issues quickly and fairly. I enjoy volunteering at the school and the opportunities for parents to get involved are abundent with a strong volunteer program and PTO, and the school encourages and fosters parent involvment. Sophomore: I love Henry Clay! I'm currently a sophomore here, and there's so much excitement every day. Every staff member in the building always makes sure you have what you need, and that you feel safe while you're in the building. There's so many clubs/ sports, surely everyone can find one that interests them. My only problem with H C is the size. WAY to crowded for the amount of kids. Everyone is in the hallway and there's no elbowroom whatsoever. AC is constantly out, and i have friends have to move to different classrooms throughout the day because their room was unusable. The funding for this school stretches and still isn't enough. There are too many kids at Henry clay; and the budget cannot accommodate. H C definitely needs upgrades. Besides the school building itself, the faculty are all so sweet, and the students are welcoming. H C is definitely the place to be if you want to learn in a lively, fun environment!... Junior: North Oldham High School is a great school academically. I feel like they give you the choice to choose classes that will challenge your mind and help you grow as a learner. Teachers and staff encourage students to be the best version of themselves everyday in and out of the classroom. If I could change one thing about the school in general, I'd improve the athletics aspect. Being someone very involved in school sports, I notice that our school doesn't show much team spirit at games. Sure they do for football and boys basketball, but not much else. I'm aware that it's not necessarily the schools fault, but if they could at least try to advertise for other sports in order to draw a crowd that would be great!
