Oakwood High School
#2 Best Public High Schools in Dayton Area
- Oakwood City School District, OH
Alum: As an alumni, I would say my overall experience at Oakwood was great. A majority of the teachers I had were engaging and enthusiastic about the material they were teaching. Some examples include, but are not limited to: Matt Deters, Brian Martin, Connie Abner, Brooks-Hedstrom, Amy Ostdiek, Fred Schmitz. These teachers go out of their way to help students-- whether it focuses on school material or just life advice in general. Some other teachers.. Not so much. Albeit, when applying to colleges, I felt that the guidance department didn't exactly give a damn about you unless you were "gifted" or in the running to become Salutatorian or Valedictorian. Kind of a shame average students get put on the back burner. Overall, the academics were challenging but engaging as well-- I've already applied some of the knowledge from my AP Comparative Government class in real life scenarios. Cool!

Veritas Collegiate Academy
- Private School
- Chesapeake, VA
Parent: My young kids love this school. They have made really sweet friends and they are learning a ton! We really like the classical approach because it emphasizes mastering traditional knowledge such as history, geography, scripture, grammar, phonics, art, science, math, and music. The memory period is very effective for teaching memorized material through song, and there are many fun special holidays, events, and field trips, as well as swim team/swim lessons and school play!
The middle and high school are also amazing! The humanities/omnibus courses are really unique in combining classic literature with history, religion, politics, and philosophy--so it's all combined in a way that connects and make sense. Students read the primary texts from that time period rather than just reading a vague summary in a typical textbook. A great preparation for college and a great way to gain wisdom for life!

Springboro High School
#4 Best Public High Schools in Dayton Area
- Springboro Community City School District, OH
Junior: All the teachers at Springboro High School are highly knowledgeable and motivated to tend to the needs of each student. The administration is involved greatly in the insurance of safety to all teachers and students. With the variety of courses available such as general, college prep, advanced placement, and college credit plus, it’s easy to mold one’s education to best suite each student. Not only is the classroom learning excellent, but the athletics are as well. Springboro has tons of spirit to cheer on the teams. To improve this school, I would suggest offering a better variety of healthy food choices in the lunchroom. This would highly benefit students by helping to develop healthy eating habits. Overall, Springboro High School is a great place to be.

Shaw Elementary School
#14 Best Public Elementary Schools in Dayton Area
- Beavercreek City School District, OH
Parent: Shaw has some incredible teachers like Darcy Turner, who work with so much enthusiasm and joy with your kids. The academics have integrated tech, and there is project based learning in some grades. It's a very diverse school as well thanks to being next to the air force base. My kid is only in third grade so I don't know much about clubs etc. I do wish there was more emphasis on STEAM and less on state testing. not a fan of their lunch offerings - kids can get cereal and string cheese as a lunch a few days a week and that's no kind of life to live.

Bellbrook High School
#6 Best Public High Schools in Dayton Area
- Bellbrook-Sugarcreek Local School District, OH
Sophomore: It is a good place to go overall. Most of the teachers are kind and considerate. I have only had the pleasure of suffering through bad classes once or twice. Recently the music department isn't getting the funding it needs or deserves, but with what they are given they do well. The engineering department is nice as well, but you can still tell that it is developing and growing. One large issue with this school is that clinically diagnosed depression seems to run rampant, I'm not sure of the cause, but it does affect how it feels to attend the school.

BASIS Independent McLean
- Private School
- McLean, VA
- PK, K-12
Parent: Our son is currently in the 2nd grade. He has been at the school for two years, and it has been a wonderful experience. The enthusiasm of the teachers, who are truly experts in the subjects they teach, is infectious. They consistently set high standards for all students at every stage of their academic career. This is a school that prioritizes academics and the students themselves; it is targeted to students with intellectual curiosity and a strong work ethic. We are very happy here!
