Freshman: I attended Ukiah High for only a short period of time and promptly transferred for a handful of reasons. That being said, I did enjoy many aspects of the school. On one hand, there was only about 20% of students (a rough estimate) who challenged themselves academically and sought future plans regarding college, which you know isn't for everyone. However, there was a certain "lack of care" that pervaded the student ambience, and personally, I didn't wish to stay in such an environment. On the other hand, Ukiah High did live up to the stereotypical high school rallies, games, and homecoming that made one's high school experience special. As far as academics go, if you found the pool of students who did wish to challenge themselves, there isn't much to complain about. The student sets the bar for how hard to work and how willing they wish to learn--the teachers would piggy back off of their eagerness. Niche User: This school made me have more leisure time for myself instead of constantly worrying or stressing out about presentations, homework, finals, etc. I could choose which days out of the week I wanted to/ had time to work on the assignments for my classes. I also could form a normal sleeping schedule instead of staying up until 3am writing an essay due for class at 7:30 am. Now this could also be apart of poor time management and procrastination, however on independent study, you meet with your teacher for an hour at a time thats significant for you both; not 7:30 am. I could sleep in and enjoy myself. I could get up and actually eat a decent meal for breakfast. I could also travel, work jobs, start college classes for financial benefit ( due to still being a high school undergraduate), focus on getting a driver's license, and much more that I couldn't have accomplished if I had stuck with a regular public high school!... Niche User: The only academics that are challenging and are offered at this school would English and History. In the English classes the teachers really got the class to interact and get into what he wanted to lecture for the day. They also gave you challenging work. Sophomore: The teachers at Yokayo are very understanding and they truly feel like your second family. Growing up at Yokayo, I have acquired a lot of unique character traits and I gained a sense of wanting to learn new things that I didn't previously have.
