Parent: I absolutely LOVE our school system. The teachers are more than just teachers, they care for the kids as if they were their own. They take them outside as often as possible not just during recess. The field trips they take are always educational and usually free to parents thanks to the amazing PTO!

Sophomore: I enjoy sports. Our sports program is great. The teachers are average, they prepare us for college and that is it. there are a couple teachers I love. The kids are actually pretty mean, everything revolves around popularity. What can you expect tho, everybody is a beach bum. Most kids get good grades even if they are mean. I love basketball, our varsity boys team is the best team ever! They are about to play the 2nd round of the playoffs! They dominate!

Parent: Everyone is so supportive and truly care about the overall well being of the students. The teachers, administrators, and staff work together collaboratively to create a positive learning environment. The cafeteria food is great, the safety of the building is fantastic and the students respect each other and the school.

Senior: I liked going to high school at Manteo. The teachers and staff were always friendly and people you could go to if you needed any help or advice without feeling judged. It was easy to make friends here since the school is so small, everyone knows everyone. We had a large variety of clubs and organizations for everybody. Our sports teams were very diversified and reasonably good. The only two negative things I could say about this school is the amount of homework assigned was CRAZY and the food was awful. I felt like I never got a break with homework. But I guess this was reasonable in the long run to prepare us for college. The food on the other hand was just terrible. It was either pizza or chicken and neither was good. By the time I got to lunch, since I had the last lunch out of three, there was barely any food left so I had to eat what no one else wanted.

Senior: Cape Hatteras Secondary School has more opportunities than expected for its students considering its small size, but still falls short in preparing those enrolled for college. While there is a guidance counselor and two employees specifically for student to reference if they have questions about anything during the application process, these advisors are shared with the two other high schools in Dare County. There is a bit of pressure for students to shoot low and to stay instate. However, dual enrollment classes through the College of the Albermarle are avalaoble to CHSS students in the junior or senior years of high school.
In addition to COA classes, students may take online courses via North Carolina Virtual Public Schools and Apex Learning, which thankfully bridges the gap between this rural institution and more urban ones for many classes.
