Grant High School
Junior: Out of any high school, I think that Grant High is one of the most racially involved. Every quarter we have a student-led race talk session, which creates a safe space for everyone to speak. So far, we have covered: cultural appropriation, immigration laws, gentrification, tokenization, redlining, etc. Additionally, we have an annual cultural kickback where all the affinity groups (JSU, APIA, BSU, MECHA, IPSU) organize an assembly where they speak about a relevant race issue and serve food related to the associated groups. It's a very fun way to learn about someones culture. Not only does Grant address race issues, but also LGBTQ+ issues. During reconstruction, simple men and women's bathrooms were replaced with gender neutral bathrooms, to make sure that everyone is comfortable. Instead of a huge room with numerous stalls, individual stalls were made with actual door handles.
