Freshman: Pembroke hill is, for the most part, a very academic school that puts students on a path for success. The teachers are very kind and open and always give chances for help and success, and the athletics leaves nothing to be a desired with a host of different sports. I’ve always felt very accepted at the school, I’m friends with lots of my peers and get along well with my teachers. Despite all that though, the school still leaves some things to be desired. The school lacks diversity to an extent, while there are a variety of different students and people, I sometimes look into the hallway, and I can’t see others like me. The school has a very large white population, which isn’t awful, but sometimes leaves people of other ethnicities feeling excluded. I’ve had an overall positive experience at Pembroke, and it gives me all lot of opportunities for success, but it also has it’s short-comings and flaws, though I can see active change within my own school.... Alum: The best parts about BVN is the community. There are so many opportunities to meet new people and establish a network of friendships. Additionally, there are many academic opportunities where students are able to showcase their knowledge and skills. While students may be able to showcase these academic achievements, they unfortunately are not appreciated enough compared to the athletics. In these athletics, majority of them are toxic environments designed to discourage beginners who would like to try something new and bring up star athletes. The coaches of the athletics favor these talented athletes and do very little to make the experience enjoyable for new athletes, creating toxic interactions between student athletes. Alum: AMDG! This is a great catholic high school, one of the best you can attend in the entire state. The sports program is fantastic. It may be even better than some colleges. The academics are of great quality - everyone in Rockhurst is both smart and athletic. The entire organization is closely connected to the local community and every Rockhurst students feel like brothers to each other. The only thing disappointing is diversity. This school is 90% white with few minorities, so there's not much to represent different cultures and races. Regardless, you'll never regret being part of the Rockhurst organization. Sophomore: Overall my experience here was pretty positive. Some of the best parts are that bullying (not teasing) is pretty much non existent, as the staff is very involved and they are not there for the money, but there to help students. They really make sure everything is ok with everyone, and stop bad situations if they see them. The sports are also really good, so if students are interested in that, it is a great option. The counselors are good and help you decide what you want to do later in your life, so you are not lost in which courses you should take. One of the only downsides that is notable is that the teachers really vary. There are some truly amazing and experienced teachers, but then there are also newer, less experienced teachers, which can interfere with students' learning experiences. Senior: Aquinas has been my home for the past four years and I would not trade those years for anything. This school has given me a family that I will be a part of for the rest of my life. It has stellar academics and a very faith-filled community. There are many clubs, groups, and teams to be a part of. Everyone at this school is somehow involved in extracurricular activities. Senior: My experience at Shawnee Mission South has been nothing but positive, it's all about what you make of the experience. Staying involved through sports, clubs, and electives is vital to making your high school experience a blast. My biggest recommendation for anyone going to South would be to join the cross country team. The distance team is just one happy family that is so welcoming and fun! Senior: Desoto High School saved my life. Last year, I decided to transfer from a neighboring school, Mill Valley. Mill Valley was a dreadful and disappointing experience, to say the least. I was depressed, mostly due to the students that attended there making me feel out of place, and I found myself contemplating life more than once. However, after an abundance of convincing my parents, I found myself in a new school. Suffering from anxiety, I was anxious my experience at Desoto would relate a lot to my experience at Mill Valley. Nonetheless, I found people that understood me. People weren't snobby and entitled like Mill Valley, they were approachable and kind. Soon enough, I found myself more friends within my first week there than in my entire experience at Mill Vally. Even the "popular" kids were more accepting. Sophomore: Staley is a great school over all there kind to others. The upper class man help a lot to freshman and getting to know the teachers and the clubs and sport are amazing in their own way. I have made lots of memories and I have grown a lot since 8 grade coming to Staley because of the people there I feel like things could have been better with just not trying to be fake in aspects of inclusivity like in clubs or sports they don’t fund enough money for clubs like step which I do and the sponsors or the teachers that are helping the clubs or running the club. Senior: The teachers truly try to connect with every one of their students. The student atmosphere is studious yet uplifting! The after school activities are definitely the best part, as it feeds into the passion that the students have at Mill Valley. This includes football games, relay for life (cancer event that raises tens of thousands every year with fun activities to fundraise for the American Cancer Society), theatrical performances, and more. Although Mill Valley’s environment is very uplifting, I would like to see change would be an open lunch policy. Lunch is often quite restricting and contains limited options of food every week.
