State College Area High School
#1 Best Public High Schools in Centre County
- State College Area School District, PA
- Rating 3.82 out of 5 515 reviews
Alum: State College Area High School is an incredible public school with very expansive opportunities one may find in a University, just offered for high school students (AP, IB, Honors, College Prep, Regular, etc levels you pick yourself). There are 6 languages other than English you can gain credit in, many music and athletic related activities, computer science programming, agriculture, specified science electives that count for credit, Penn State Commute program to take in-person college classes/research opportunities, etc.
The school is very large, with average graduating classes of about 700 students, and while there are many hard working and gifted staff members, mental health awareness and psychological help are very lacking. As a student, if you have an mental health issue, you either solve it yourself, proactively tell the counselors/staff what you need, or ask for help with the risk of counselors diagnosing you in a less than 12 minute convo, leading to improper support.

Junior: As someone who has gone to this school and has experienced change, this school has been able to exceed greatly in my academics and help me grow in my faith. People mention the teachers being a problem and at times, I can see it, but I must say that it is not fully true. With some minor incidents here and there, I have learned fine and achieved high marks over the course of my stay. Another thing that I want to mention is the great teams SJCA has to offer. With it being a small school, it gives people a chance to try sports and develop skills needed for being a leader. With teams such as the XC team winning states countless times, this shows the constant effort put into these teams to see success. High school is what you make it and I must say that goes with the school itself. If you go in with a bad attitude, it won't go well but if you go in with a positive attitude, high school will be more enjoyable and something you will remember. As a junior, I can't wait for senior year!

Bellefonte Area High School
#2 Best Public High Schools in Centre County
- Bellefonte Area School District, PA
- Rating 3.4 out of 5 148 reviews
Junior: I liked the wide variety of classes offered at Bellefonte. I also liked how much the school and the community supported the Arts. I did not like most of the teachers employed here. Some were very good and very passionate about what they taught, but most did not put the effort I would have liked to see into their teaching. I also felt the "block days" were not a good use of my time. I think that teachers need additional training before teaching block days. The time is just not filled appropriately. However, the wide variety of AP classes as well as honors classes makes up for the poor teachers. Students have opportunities to earn a semester of college credit for less than half the cost of in person college classes.

Penns Valley Area Junior/Senior High School
#3 Best Public High Schools in Centre County
- Penns Valley Area School District, PA
- Rating 3.71 out of 5 126 reviews
Senior: Penns Valley has been a great high school experience for me, and even if I had the choice to go to a different school, I know that I wouldn't. Since it is such as small size, I have gotten to know a vast majority of the students and faculty, whereas in a larger school that would not have been as possible. My teachers have all been extremely supportive and willing to help me in any way they can. When I need extra help, I can get lots of one on one time with them. This is due to my school's small size, but also my teacher's love of teaching and their care for each individual student. Another thing I like about my school is that it has been recently renovated. This means that it is up to date with the newest commodities and the building works well to accommodate for the needs of the students. I think that my classmates would agree with me when I say that I am so fortunate to have gotten to go to a school as wonderful as Penns Valley.

Bald Eagle Area Junior/Senior High School

- Rating 3.67 out of 5 67 reviews
Alum: It was very welcoming and felt like home. The academic programs could have been better. Like there should be more electives for science majors instead of having so many cooking and agriculture classes. Also some of the teachers were very unprofessional and should not of had their job for the way they treated students. The food was also very poor, but it was nice to see that in the last year they have been trying to approve the lunches. Overall, it was a very good school and i do believe that i got a lot out of my six years.
