Senior: I believe that Culver City High School is a great school with many unique and interesting classes. I really enjoy the school events that are set up and the classes are very well done. Many teachers are well informed on the subject taught and are fair, professional and considerate. The school itself is great however the violence and disrespect from students is a large issue in the community. Senior: It's not as big as other LA high schools, so it's a tight-knit community. Everybody knows everybody, so it's nice to always have people to talk to in my classes. With most of the teachers, it's easy to tell they care about their subject, but sometimes you might end up with a few that don't so much. Our sports programs have been colossally improving over the past few years, and it's so easy to join any team that interests you. LACES is diverse and inclusive, and dozens of student-led clubs dominate. The campus is small and easy to navigate. There are color coded buildings for different subjects! There's also a quaint garden where we're starting to grow vegetables and herbs. A big loss at LACES is school spirit. It's hard to come across with no football team, so cheerleaders step in on basketball games and tennis matches. Alum: I started at Rancho Cucamonga High School, 2020, during COVID, so of course my first year wasn’t great due to distant learning and setting my peers only through a tv screen, but once I was on the campus, my time at Rancho was great! Junior: North High School is a very safe environment with active staff and bright teachers. North High is full of support as they have a career center to help apply for jobs, special education classes for those who may need these classes, speech, and counseling. They offer many sports and is one of the top teams in Torrance. North is considered the "safest" out of all the other schools like West High, South High, Torrance High, and other schools within Torrance. When it comes to teacher, north high has very nice and hardworking teachers as they joke while keeping the classroom and students concentrated. Senior: I believe Redlands High School has a very safe, inclusive, and a generally positive environment. One of the best resources on campus, the teachers here are excellent, and many go above and beyond to ensure that students properly understand the material. Specifically, the advanced math and science class teachers are always willing to provide additional resources for struggling students, go over topics multiple times, and are forgiving and willing to listen to students if they need something specific. Though there tends to be pressure to succeed, students hardly discuss personal test scores, statistics, or any information which could be used to "rank" a student. On the other hand, there have been multiple issues with students vaping in the restrooms or being involved in on-campus fights. Especially amongst the underclassmen, there is a frequent smell of marijuana in the restrooms, certain types of vandalism, and (though not as frequent) fights between students or groups of students.... Parent: Our child has been at Larchmont since kinder and has thrived. He went to the elementary Fairfax campus, a smaller campus with spacious classrooms, and he has loved the bigger Selma campus too. The leadership works hard to create an accessible and friendly atmosphere for the students and parents so there is a strong sense of community. The admin is collaborative and value parent input. The teachers are nurturing and attentive and know when to give students more help or more of a challenge. There are many enrichment classes (art, music, gardening, sports teams, band), a social-emotional curriculum and clubs. Most kids eat the (optional) lunch prepared in the Fairfax kitchen and is SO good. Senior: I believe the best aspect I can point to with Eleanor Roosevelt as a school is its great diversity. There are so many different students who have different talents, goals, and personalities and to be amongst that environment is very interesting. What helps with this is that our schools' population is big, having 5,000 students attending. This makes it so that it seems like you're meeting someone new everyday! With someone like me who came from an environment where there wasn't much diversity and it seemed like you would always see the same person every other day I loved this change of pace. The downside to such a big population of students is there are a lot of students who aren't there for the right reasons and are only there to start issues with others. And with our population it sometimes feels that if you're not a outgoing or extroverted person, you feel like you get lost in the shuffle. Sophomore: The best part about SOCES is that it is very diverse. There are many chances for you to start new friendships. I have built many relationships with teachers as well. There are also many chances for you to participate in school activities, like starting or joining clubs, doing a sport, or being involved in places like the robotics team, Academic Decathlon, or Speech and Debate. I was very impressed with the school’s philosophy of not only excelling in academics, but also integrating social and emotional awareness into the curriculum. Parent: Having charter school funds is fantastic, but all the extra benefits have been amazing. My teacher of record has been fantastic about recommending materials and curriculum that would be a good fit or interest for my son, and helping us through the process of dealing with his extra challenges (gifted plus adhd.) Access to school wide resources like iready and educational websites has been great. Plus, there are regular opportunities for further enrichment, involvement, or support through zoom— art and music classes, weekly school counselor meetings, speech classes, storytime and activity bonus classes, and more. There are once a month park meetup days with science activities for the kids and a chance to play together too. I know there are a bunch more in person activities like science fairs, drama productions, field trips, and more, but right now they are centralized closer to the main campus.
