Niche User: Our child is just over the halfway point in Kinder, and we would select Starr King again if we could do it all over. Not only is our daughter learning Mandarin, she is also learning to love learning languages and is so proud to pick up Spanish wherever she can, including from some classmates. She gained confidence through the parent-led fall soccer season, has a gardening class, drama, a fun P/E teacher and a committed principal. Her class ratio is good for public at 20 kids: 1 teacher. And, our class in particular is very lucky to have volunteer parent helpers several days a week and there are many lessons to be drawn from our very diverse student body. I'm not sure how the older grades do it, but one thing many would like is native English-speaking English teachers in the upper grades. I think sometimes they have non-native teachers, who may have thick accents, teach English literature. Other things that would be nice to have include: a chorus, a gymnasium and more electives and after school choices. Keep tabs on the development of our remodel, and spend some time observing the 5th graders. Their knowledge of Chinese--written and spoken-- is truly impressive. And read "A Parent's Guide to Mandarin Immersion" by Elizabeth Weise, a former founding parent of the program. SK is detailed in the book.
