Senior: I loved the flexibility of online school. With Oregon Charter Academy I was able to work almost 20 hours a week while staying mostly caught up on school. Despite the pros of flexibility, I would like to see ORCA implement more accountability regarding late and missing work. Senior: Amazing school! I used to feel disconnected from school and the educational experience before seeking alternative education and eventually finding ORVA. You can guide yourself through how you learn and pick a plan that works for you. Parent: Going into homeschooling, I wanted to do it my way. I wanted to pick the curriculum and get it done on my schedule. I wanted the leniency of taking vacation in September and February and April (when places are less crowded). With Baker we have all that leniency, plus the accountability and paid curriculum (books are expensive)! My two girls have been in Baker for 6 years and I'll be starting my son in 1st next year. There is mostly good and some not so great things about schooling with Baker, but mostly, it's good. I love that we've had the same advisory teacher throughout, which is great for my daughter, who doesn't like change. Some of the not so great has been changed for the better over the years, such as how we turn in paperwork. Other things, like how progress monitoring is done, still has room for improvement. Senior: Willamette connections academy is an exceptional school to attend, during my time here I have been able to accelerate my education significantly in ways I couldn't in public school. I have been in this school for 3 years and in that time I went from having a C and B grade average throughout my courses in public school to an A and B average throughout my time here. while attending connections I was offered the opportunity to take 4 AP courses, 2 honors courses, and 2 college prep courses. I would have never been able to take these rigorous courses while in public school. the teachers here are amazing and engaging with the students I have never once felt lost in a lesson because the teachers provide many resources in order to help the students understand the lessons and if further help was needed, the teacher's responses to webmails, texts, and calls were prompt and elaborating. Parent: I was sceptical about starting our daughter in an online school but it's been great. The materials presented to the children is good. The teachers are very available and responsive. children can set up 1-on-1 meetings with their teacher any time. Even if they don't, teacher set up time with the children before every test to make sure the child understands the topic and is ready for the test. Parent: Logos Charter School allows our 2nd grader to learn at his own pace. Our 2nd grader was having trouble learning to read. Our ES worked with us until we were able to find a curriculum that worked best for him. He is now reading thanks to an online program called, Reading Eggs! I do wish the school offered more activities/field trips for K-2 graders. Being apart of a Charter School versus being in a public school setting where the children attend school 5 days a week, I feel my child is missing out on the little, but memorable activities such as a Christmas performance for the parents or exchanging Valentines with their classmates. Also, the socialization is hard being that the children are in short, one hour classes with different children. My child has had a hard time forming solid friendships. Senior: I started going to Corbett in fifth grade. I left a big public school to go there and I never regretted it. Corbett is pretty small but that just means there are more opportunities to get to know your teachers and for them to get to know you. Corbett focuses on academics more so then sports. Which was really nice because for someone who wanted to learn as much as they could and get college credit a focus on academics was the best thing ever. However One thing that I would want to see change is that almost all the classes are AP which is nice for college credit but for kids that don't care about the college credit or just don't want to take a college level class I think they should have some classes be both AP and Non-AP, with the students split between them that want to be in each of them.... Senior: Silvies River Charter School is an excellent opportunity for self-disciplined students, who can arrange their own schedules around work or extracurricular activities and earn dual credits through enrollment in online college classes. It is flexible without sacrificing quality, and it offers many opportunities for students to make the most of their high school years and customize their paths to graduation. Since it is an online school, there is less social activity (but less drama). The teachers are very good about branching out into new curriculum to provide the best educational experience, and they hold classes both in person and through such programs as Google Classroom. Junior: I am currently a Junior in High School and have truly enjoyed my time at Metro East Web Academy. They offer a wonderful opportunity to participate in the early collage programs and it allows me to receive my Associates degree for no cost! They have amazing and supportive teachers and it is a safe learning environment. They also offer a lot of school events and extracurricular activities like National Honors Society, Leadership, and many clubs! I am currently participating in their volunteer tutoring, and am able to help tutor kindergarteners! Niche User: I am a Concordia University-Portland student and they have a great education program with Faubion. All the teachers there are welcoming and allow for the college students to help guide the students in their learning. Faubion also gives their students a good example of being prepared for college as it has open doors for Concordia University college students as they serve them as role models. Alum: I studied at Beverly Cleary Middle School for two consecutive years: grades 7-8. It was a lovely experience as the staff really got to know you and everyone was very inclusive. Coming from a different country and having this as my first ever school in the U.S. was a wise choice. Located in Portland, it has a lot of diversity and promotes freedom of expression. What perplexed me though was the students' attitudes compared to what I experienced in Asia. They were too direct and blunt that they lacked finesse and seemed to be a tad bit more rude in an outsider's perspective.
