Freshman: I love Flordia State University because it offers me so many opportunities socially, academically, and creatively. For the sake of this response, I will focus on the latter. In my hometown, I was not provided with many creative outlets. I felt alone in my creative interests, such as photography, film/cinematography, creative writing, etc. I thought that these interests would never help me in my career. However, after coming to FSU, I have seen so many opportunities that involve creativity! I have joined the screenwriting club, have had peers model for my photography, have had professors edit my poetry, and have talked with professors about psychology within literature. Many advisors, professors, mentors, and peers have helped guide me down the best path for me, utilizing my creativity so that I may prosper in life. I no longer feel alone in my creative pursuits.... Junior: Let me tell you, this high school is #1 in Florida and #4 in the nation for an excellent reason. This unique program 2-year program has been amazing. I have never been happier to switch to such a fantastic school. If you're lucky enough to be the few allowed into the school after applying, then you'll be able to experience a schedule that is unlike any other high school I have ever seen. You have 3 hours every single day to yourself (and college classes as this is a dual enrollment program) and to complete any work. The teachers and fellow students are just absolutely amazing! The environment is stunning as we are housed within a college campus; it's very open with lots of green! Not to mention this program allows you to start college 2 years early.. completely free! You don't exactly have a choice, however. I won't lie. The school is tough. You lose lots of free time. But it's so worth it! Just know how to balance your social and work life and you'll be fine!... Alum: I started attending Orange County Virtual School since the sixth grade and it has made my academic journey easier to control. Having 24/7 access to all my courses in one place was a significant improvement from moving throughout the school building looking for which class I need to head to next. Even though there is not as much socialization in a virtual school as in a brick-and-mortar school, the live lesson opportunities allowed me to interact with other students and get clarification on any concepts I was struggling with. There were also school workdays where students could come to the actual OCVS building and work with each other or with the instructors face-to-face. Perhaps one of the biggest benefits is that I can not only work on course assignment at my own pace, but finish each semester in May instead of June, enabling me to graduate early.... Alum: St. Petersburg Collegiate High School allowed me levels of freedom that would have never been possible at a typical public high school. The ability to formulate my own college schedule made room for me to have a job and focus on my interests. Junior: This school is amazing, and is perfect for anyone who has a super busy schedule, like me! I have a rigorous ballet schedule, that requires my focus and attendance most of the hours of the day. Because of FLVS, I am able to continue to pursue my passion for dance and get an excellent education, at the same time! The teachers are so dedicated and are constantly checking in on us, and providing help when needed. The course homepage is super easy to navigate around and makes learning fun and stress-free. It would be nice to see some updates in the course resources, however. Most of the videos and pictures are old, and sometimes glitchy. Senior: Going to the College Academy at Broward College was the best decision I could have made. The faculty and staff genuinely care about your academic development. There are SAT study sessions and office hours to hone in on academics. The students are extremely friendly and welcoming, it is not very cliquey. Principal Haygood is committed to every student's academic success and college application process. Dr. Weinstein provides insightful information to keep everyone up to date with college applications. Mr. Olliviere creates outstanding emails with fly-in and scholarship opportunities. I made my best friends in CA; I got closer to people on the path to success. I even started my own Broward College club: BC Fit. All the resources you could ask for are at your fingertips at College Academy. Alum: I went there as a kid back in the late 90s-early '00s (I'm 30 now)-back when it was Montessori Island Charter School and at the old building. And I can honestly say that it was the best school. I loved going to school and it created a love of learning in me that has lasted a lifetime. I was very far ahead when I went to middle school, even after I had skipped a year of elementary school. I know because my mother, who had been on the board back when it was first founded, still keeps up with the school that the education there and experience is the same and that you cannot ask for a better place for your kid to go.... Alum: My experience was mostly good. I got the great opportunity of being able to go to college at the same time as I was finishing up high school, which helped a lot in terms of money since the college classes were paid for by the school. The teachers were mostly helpful, the classes were good. It was just a lot of brain usage as you have multiple high school AP classes as well as various college classes in between. Now that I am done I do feel accomplished but I can definitely say that it was hard to balance everything out, especially with a slight language barrier, I felt that I had to work harder.... Junior: I have attended Malone High School since Kindergarten, and I have grown to love the school and its staff. Everyone is so welcoming and friendly. Sophomore: I want to emphasize one thing about HVS: its not for everyone. If you have a hard time staying motivated in traditional in person schooling, make sure you think hard before you sign up full time at this school. A big part of HVS is having the self discipline to get things done. The teachers are typically super helpful, but you have to attend live lessons and ask for help when you need it. With that being said, I think this school is great for motivated students who want more flexibility in their learning, either to work, volunteer, and generally decide how you structure your time. As long as you submit 3 or more assignments in each of your classes per week (you can turn in work 24/7) you'll remain in good standing. You can also resubmit most assignments up to 3 times for a better score which is awesome for High School students hoping to get a higher GPA. Parent: "Good morning, we live in Ponte Vedra Beach exactly 2 miles from Ocean Palms Elementary School but to not lose my job (no after care) we were obligated to move her to Flagler Charter School and now I'm driving around 30 minutes to my daughter to go to school with after care available. We've tried all the private schools around our home without spots. Nicole was adapting well and loving the school and the After care and school administrators didn't bother even to answer Yes or No after 6 months trying waitlist and several phone calls and e-mails. The last time Ms Kim LaMondie answered “At this time we are on a waitlist. We will be sure to put Nicole on the list. I will reach out to you as soon as we open our waitlist.” was on Jan/23/2023 and since then we didn’t have any responses after several times trying contact.
