Alum: Demarest ‘21 alum. This school prepares you for any school you want to intend including the Ivy League, military academies, the best public schools, and others. Most common schools my classmates went to were Rutgers, NYU, and Northeastern (where I am now.) Students usually attend Princeton, Cornell, and Penn every year. The rest of the Ivy League has been populated well, too. A 98th percentile SAT or ACT does not set you apart here. Students must beware the stress and imbalance possible here. Parent: Very highly rated academically but sometimes it's all about the numbers and ratings and not about the human beings. Admin circles the wagons when questions are asked about curriculum or teachers are criticized. Sports admin has been less than satisfactory and very belligerent. Senior: I would rate my experience with Princeton Public Schools as very good because I have received a broad liberal arts education, I have been challenged, and I have been introduced to new subjects and experiences. The dedicated staff and faculty at Princeton Public Schools make it a lively environment, where students are enthusiastic to learn. In addition, the sports and arts programs are well-recognized. I have had the pleasure to participate in both sports and the arts at Princeton High School, and I have gotten much fulfillment and joy from both the Choral Music Department and the Varsity Fencing Team. One critique of the school is the overcrowding issue. Many students, including myself, sit on the floor for lunch because of the lack of seats available around the school. Parent: Our child has been in the district now for 4 years. 3 years in the "sending schools", 1 year at WEMS, and starting 8th grade now. Last year during the pandemic the staff/ teachers all made it possible for our child to grow while sitting behind a computer. I know this is not easy on anyone, nor does wearing a mask 100% of the day exactly the best case scenario, but between outdoor "tailgates," clubs, committees, etc. they make it a great environment for these children. I thought we would have more complaints about the early morning start, but not here always happy to get to school. Junior: Livingston High School gives many wonderful opportunities to their students. They hold college fairs, have various clubs, many sports, and other activities to get students involved. The academics are stellar as well. Livingston High School offers a plethora of class options with various levels of difficulty. The school makes sure that each student is able to stimulate their own interests while also completing their graduation requirements. The environment that the teachers and administration build is very friendly and welcoming. Students feel safe at school because they know that they always have someone to talk to. Sophomore: Glen Ridge High School is filled with a lot of teachers who seem to truly want their students to succeed and perform to the best of their ability. Things in the world change very quickly, and the curriculum is adaptive to this. Despite being a very predominantly white town, I think that there's a strong newfound effort to spread cultural awareness, specifically in the English, Music, and History programs. Furthermore, with the rise in Covid-19 cases nationwide, the school had overall been very accommodating with virtual schoolwork, and staying very organized when it comes to giving students extra help and prioritizing their education as well as their safety.... Alum: Westfield has a rather abrasive academic environment. Those made of stone become polished, but not everyone is made of stone. The culture is competitive in almost every area, whether it be the arts or academics. Also, just as a product of those who live in the town, the culture is very white. The education system works hard to get students to learn about other cultures, but many kids are still very culture deaf when they leave. There were times where bullying was seen as something that is beneath Westfield but is really sort of swept under the rug. Niche User: I moved to Moorestown in 1998 with my two young children, ages 7 & 5 in tow. We came from a small town in central New Jersey and I thought they were doing fine in school. The first year in elementary school was a bit difficult. They both had some catching up to do but all the teachers were all fantastic. My children loved the new school and all the teachers so it helped with the transition. The rest is history and they both went on to top universities and have successful careers today. Junior: It is a good school. They don’t tolerate bullying and have several security guards that walk around. The teachers are good with helping you understand a topic and get you to have all assignments turned in before the end of the marking period. There are many extracurricular activities you can participate in, including language clubs, art club, and so much more. They also offer a Polytech program that can get you started on a specific future goal ranging from culinary program to animal science program. I personally am in the animal science program . These programs are limited on how many students they allow in it so apply as fast as you can. They also hold many fundraiser for a variety of different things and also hold a blood drive. The counselors are send out emails to inform you of what is happening and if send out information about things to do with college. Middle School Student: This is a very amazing school. I grew up as a child in this district from pre k to 8th grade, and let me just say it was amazing. The staff is extremely nice to children, and the principle might be strict, but he treats the students well and prepares them for later in life. Parent: The Holmdel School District provides the best all around educational opportunities in the State, which can be attributed to what is occurring in the school and outside. For instance, there is a heavy emphasis on academics by many within the community -- the instruction that occurs during the school day is supported by tutoring at home to make sure that their child can succeed. Parents also provide tremendous support for children who are interested in the arts and sports. The Holmdel community also passed a referendum to support investments in the school facilities. Alum: I had the privilege of attending SHSD from K to 12th grade. The teachers are passionate and nurturing. There is strong parent involvement. Being a smaller district, there is an immense sense of community that I believe to not be as prevalent in neighboring districts. I am proud to say some of the friends I still have today are the same ones I met in Kindergarten. Bernards High is amazing at preparing their students for college. If you request a list of colleges the graduating seniors are attending, you will see dozens are attending Ivy League and other top-ranked universities. In my own college experience, I feel more prepared than most of my peers, and I directly attribute this to the quality of education I received at BHS. Classes at BHS are rigorous, and the students ambitious -- however, there is NOT an overly competitive, toxic environment that I hear about from friends in some surrounding districts. Sophomore: It is competitive and well-balanced. All staff and encouraging and supportive. Although many students are a big distraction to the school environment, this school can stay on top of its education along with its extracurricular. Senior: My experience at Rutherford High School was enjoyable. Unlike some peers, I was new to the Rutherford public school system during my freshman year. I didn't know anyone but I quickly grew to know people and made friends throughout my high school years. What I loved most about Rutherford was the art department. I always had a love for art and being in the art department, I felt really in my element. There was not a school year that went by where I didn't take at least 1 art course. The teachers in these departments are also so welcoming and very helpful to those that want to pursue their art journey. Even for those who aren't art students, there is a little something for everybody to enjoy. The amount of courses that you can take is incredible from robotics, textiles, business, computer programming, photography, etc. I truly did enjoy my time in this school, even with the interrupted time during covid.... Senior: Ridgewood High Schools's motto, "A Tradition of Excellence" is not reflective of RHS's population. Ridgewood goes beyond excellence. Every year Ridgewood administration is constantly finding new ways to better the school. Last year they bought a large screen-printer. A few years before they bought 3-D printers for the science lab. Now while Ridgewood is often encouraging students, especially girls to become young scientists and pursue STEM majors, the school also provides many opportunities for students interested in liberal arts to explore the world of literature, history, psychology, etc. There are interesting and unique classes students can take such as Physics, Engineering, and Art (one class), Dance, Robotics, Art History, and Crime and Mystery Literature. However, I feel that besides all these amazing aspects, the school does not truly listen to their students. Even with a student government, students are still told no, constantly.
