Alum: I had a wonderful experience at South Pasadena. I had numerous opportunities in building lasting healthy mentoring relationships with a handful of teachers. This school really did everything in their willpower to make sure there was a place for everyone. There was diversity everywhere, and the system supported and encouraged it. There were many different clubs started by students. This alone reflected the school's success in inspiring their students to become engaged in school and taking their time in high school to build up their personal identities. Middle School Student: Redondo Union High School is an excellent school for many reasons including their academics, college readiness and sports. Their teachers make sure you get the most out of their academic classes, they want to see you pass the class with your best effort and that encourages their students to do their best no matter what academic struggles they face. Their college counselors help you a tremendous amount your senior year. They help you sign up for FAFSA, grants and scholarships to help pay for college and they give students helpful information they wouldn't be able to find on their own.This is beneficial to the students so they can be to choose what to eat and they can still be healthy. The schools sports teams are incredibly talented, they are always bringing the school home to CIF or the championships. We are fortunate to have a hall full of their trophies and accomplishments. Senior: I first entered the El Segundo Unified School District as a freshman with very few people that I could associate myself with. I had nobody to rely on at the start of high school, until Link Crew leaders gave me guidance. I wanted to give back this year because I was grateful to the seniors who gave their time to serve and guide me when I was a freshman. I had one freshman who has special needs who still comes up to me and says, “Hi!”, no matter the time of day. I do not know what exactly resonated with him, but I like to think he sees me as a friend who can help him with any problems he is dealing with. That’s the kind of school culture El Segundo created where everyone is welcome and no one was left ostracized because they are new or different. Senior: I really liked that it functions just as a private high school, even though it is a public high school. There are a lot of academic opportunities. There are so many AP and honors classes that I wanted to take but did not have the time. There are also many student-led clubs, which allows the students to discover new interests outside of class. All of the teachers are well educated and are very qualified to teach their classes. However, I feel like I have to criticize the administration because of its decision to change grading platforms in the middle of the school-year. The process was very inconvenient, unreasonable, and costly for the school district and students. Furthermore, the food is terrible and is full of unhealthy fat. It really needs a change in my opinion. Junior: The worst part is the stress involved. The competition mixed with the overall expectations of this school make life here stress-inducing. Having this loom over your head can get to me sometimes. However, the good part is that the reputation gives you respect from others and pushes you to become a student you thought you couldn't ever achieve. The community is always nice and you have so many support options and opportunities. I would like to see a change in the funding for certain areas. For example, the band does not get nearly enough money to get instruments that are of proper quality and that need to get replaced. Another change I want to see is in maintenance. For example, the fire alarms go off randomly and at this point, no one cares if they go off. This could pose a problem if a real emergency is happening. Senior: Throughout my K-12 years with the Irvine Unified School District, I have been surrounded by the people I can trust to guide me through my academic journey. Teachers and counselors are able to provide the help I need WHENEVER I need it (whether that be academically, mentally, or financially). In addition, our united Vaquero community brings students together of similar interests in the best clubs, sports, and on-campus activities. The only thing I would change about the Irvine Unified School District would be to increase the number of Advanced Placement and Honors courses offered to high school sophomores and juniors. Senior: I am about to finish highschool, and throughout my 4 years of highschool I have had so many opportunities as a highschool student. I was able to visit colleges, meet ceaser chavez's grandson, and even go on many fieldtrips. There were also many clubs I was able to join and I was able to help the community and help others by joining these clubs. One of my favorite clubs was the Eco club, we went to beaches etc, and we picked up trash. I enjoyed being part of the Whittier Union High School District because the staff members and my peers made me feel safe and as if I was at home. They are very welcoming and very friendly, I was able to open up to my teachers which also made me feel safe. It is pretty much a judge free zone, the highschool really takes care of their students and gives us plenty of opportunities to succeed in highschool. Senior: I have been in the Los Alamitos district since 1st grade as an out of district student, and I've noticed the district is mostly made of out of district kids. Without us, there would only be a fraction of students currently attending. People come from various counties and drives all to this college prep school and I agree that it is worth it. The schools encourage students to take courses from many many choices to cultivate an education the student could enjoy. The staff and educators are all supportive, kind, helpful, and experienced. The only complaint I have is the slight ignorance in the surrounding community, the best example is from the recent addition of ethnic studies into our curriculum of the high school. There was many protests from parents who assumed the class would be "anti-white" and mirrored the behavior onto some students. However, the district's administration can be difficult to work with, especially for school clubs, which often have to go through unnecessary bureaucracies when trying to access their finances, coordinate trips, etc. The majority of administrators within schools are also not interested in working to improve the school in any way. Administrators are often impatient, unresponsive, and difficult to coordinate with. Senior: I've attended Troy High School since my Freshman year during the Covid-19 pandemic. Attending school via Zoom 3 days per week and in person the other 2 days. My high school was very well prepared to transition to remote learning and I felt the level of education I received was still top notch even under such a stressful and odd time. The educators were always positive and supportive whether online or in person. Going into my senior year this fall, I feel prepared to academically challenge myself even more than I already have. Overall, It was a great school district to be in, very high level academics as well as good high school athletics.
