Parent: Sent our daughter here and were very glad we did. Excellent preparation for college, course rigor and level of teaching is extremely high. Extracurricular activities are abundant -- so many options for enriching athletics, cultural and social groups for students to join. Facilities are top notch. The school has gotten quite large, which is a challenge at times, and the competition for higher level classes has increased, but we found it manageable. Great resources, and their college counseling team was very helpful in guiding our child's path toward the college of her choice. Overall, excellent preparation for college success.... Alum: As a former student for Stevenson, I recommend sending your child here! They have great resources and the teachers are always going to push your child to be the best. If I was falling behind, they would set me up with resources that made me succeed. Because of this, I was able to graduate with honors! The food is wonderful and they have a ton of healthy options. They take each student into consideration and always offer the best solution to any problem. The only reason why I took off a star is because of the sports. I played volleyball and I felt like sometimes politics got involved and it affected playing time for some of the students. This created a lot of toxicity within the team and created unnecessary drama. However, on the bright side, a lot of the sports teams perform really well and the coaches do care about the players well-being. That was the only downside of attending Stevenson. Senior: Syosset High school is a n amazing place. It has given me so many opportunities. There is an unbelievably easy access to new clubs, internships, and opportunities. Junior: Oakwood is a great place for those who want to challenge themselves academically. The school has lots of AP options, as well as College Credit Plus and Career Tech partnerships. The school building itself is a little small for the number of students and, being an older building, does have some issues with climate control(it's literally freezing or a sauna). One issue, however, is the English classes, which barely prepare students for standardized testing.The administration is also very respectful of its students, and accommodating when needed. Of course, there have been some problems transitioning to online learning(due to the COVID-19 crisis), but most teachers have been understanding of the shift. In terms of teachers, I would definitely say that they are above average-- with a few exceptions. The food is also very good(with restaurant chains bringing in food as well as some simple alternatives) and generally provides options for vegetarians. However, diversity is extremely poor.... Senior: I have had a great experience with the Great Neck Public Schools over the 13 years I have been attending schools in the district. For kindergarten, I went to Parkville, for elementary school I went to E.M. Baker, for middle school I went to Great Neck North Middle School, and for high school I have been in Great Neck North High School. Let me just say that everything is amazing in these schools. I loved all of my teachers over the years, as they have really prepared me for my next step in life. I love the clubs and activities offered at the schools, as there are so many of them that the schools offer. Lastly, I love the schools’ environments, as they all have such a positive and supporting environment and help each student get through every day. Parent: I grew up in Hewlett and I am raising my daughter here. The academics are amazing. The community is welcoming and they do so many amazing events for families. Starting from FECC (early childhood center), which was warm and helped create an amazing foundation. Then onto the elementary schools, which teaches accountability along with social, emotional and academics. This district has it all! One last bit of information, your child can get credits for college once in the high school. This is an overlooked bonus but definitely great for kids and parents. This district has it all ! Sophomore: Bay Village is a wonderful school district in regards to academics and resources available to it's students. The school is very focused on academics, almost to an insane degree of perfection. While I enjoy academics and pushing myself I think that my school's obsession over perfection whether it be with SAT scores, GPA, or which college you're attending, can be extremely overwhelming at times. However, most teachers and counselors are wonderful and always wanting to help if a student is struggling. In addition , the parents and community are always very involved in the school which gives the school district a sense of community. For example, our community and school district raised over $10,000 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. This coupled with the small community of students at the various schools add to the atmosphere of community. Senior: The culture at Solon is generally very competitive. At certain times this is a good thing, but in other instances it can be harmful. It is definitely positive in terms of preparing students for college and pushing them academically. However, sometimes the pressure that results from taking all these difficult classes and being compared to your classmates can have a negative affect on a students mental health. Solon is trying to make changes to this negative mental health culture, but it just doesn't seem like enough because it isn't fixing the root cause of the issue. Senior: My overall experience with Edgemont High School was life-changing. I moved to this school at the beginning of high school and it was very rigorous and competitive, very different from my old school.
