Middle School Student: I am currently in middle school at SCSC and I would consider it a second home. I believe the learning process is fit and customized to the student so that the student personally can grow as an individual in all kinds of aspects. The teachers and students are all very welcoming the moment you walk in. SCSC is not like other schools. I feel the diversity at this school is excellent. One thing that makes my school so unique is a little thing we call "100 Book Challenge". Each school day we read 30 minutes of a book of our choice that is our level. Based on the student's reading ability, we are matched with a level. We log a line every 15 minutes we read. The point of this is that if you reach a multiple of 100, you get awarded a medal and recognition of the entire school. I have not even scratched the surface of what makes my school unique and extraordinary compared to others, but I'm running out of room to write. Niche User: I love the educational aspects of the school. The teachers are great and really work on making it is individual experience for the students. My daughter loves school. The building the school is currently located is run down, but it doesn't seem to impact the quality of education too much. It would be nice to have a cafeteria. Another downside is that the board isn't all that open and seems to try hard to keep things private that should be public. Overall, they just need new blood on the board, but the current board members don't really appear interested in attracting people to the board that think different than them.... Read 12 reviews

Freshman: I personally loved my time at SHMS. The school provides lots of opportunities for its students: the variety of extracurriculars there are second to none, the music program is strong, and participation in athletics is high. One thing I will say is that while the students there are not explicitly judgemental, cliques are very much a thing and it can be difficult to branch out to other friend groups once your ¨crowd¨ has been established. I'm not a student of color or of the LGBTQ community, and I was one of the generic music/athletics/serious-about-academics kid, but from what I understand from some of my friends, if you don't fit that description, attending SHMS can be tough. Middle School Student: Colonial Middle School is a great school overall , the only things I truly did not enjoy were how they did the dances , asked for a amount of money to attend after school activities that could've did more for the students . The teachers wanted us to learn and they used different techniques to help all different students. The only thing that truly bothered me throughout my stay at the school were some of the people . Middle School Student: As a current eighth grader, I would say my experience isn't too bad. School is divided into two "teams" for each grade, with their own separate teachers. This can cause anxiety for students hoping that they will be placed on the same team as their friends. It's not really diverse, as many of the kids are upper-middle class white folks. I remember when I came to one of the elementary schools here from a school in the city, I was surprised to see a classroom full of white children (including myself). Despite this, noone at this school makes hateful remarks, and treats every race with respect. My favorite teachers are Kevin McCann (8th grade Iron Brigade conceptual physics teacher), Susan McDonald (7th grade Eagles history teacher), and Phil Hessler (art teacher). Julie Snyder (Tech Ed. teacher) and Jeff Holliday (8th grade Iron Brigade history teacher) leave a lot to be desired.... Read 2 reviews

Middle School Student: I am currently in 7th grade at this school, and I love it. The majority teachers are very kind to their students, and clubs and activities are graciously available. I don’t take many sports, but I know that football is taught in Physical Education, and there are clubs for cross county, field hockey, fencing, basketball, football, ice hockey, soccer, softball, track and field, volleyball, wrestling, golfing, mountain biking, and walking. There are three different menus for food, and about 1/3 of them are vegetarian. There are four different music options to take: chorus, band, orchestra, and general music. I am currently in my fifth year of orchestra. Four world languages are offered: Latin, Spanish, French, and German. Seventh graders take two languages and eighth graders take one. Middle School Student: It's always talking about how it doesn't tolerate bullying but there is so much bullying going on. If someone spreads a really nasty timer that could lottery get you expelled if it did happen they shouldn't just be "talked to" they should at least get suspended.
