I previously attended the regular public high school where my family was living and failing my courses due to lack of assistance for students with visual impairments. After transferring to the Blind High School at Florida School for the Deaf and Blind, I was able to learn without the barriers I had in regular school, and I was truly able to thrive in my academics and all around. Alum: Overall, Stanton was incredibly beneficial to me. By the time I entered College, the IB program at Stanton had fully prepared me for writing long essays and managing long-term projects. The course load was very heavy, especially my freshman year. This was a fairly big adjustment from middle school, but it was nothing I couldn't handle eventually. The success culture that the school really pushed was definitely toxic, and I witnessed many of my friends drop out (this was also encouraged by the school,) because they "couldn't cut it." I think the school could have been more welcoming and focused on the success of every student, not just the top ten percent. I got my IB Diploma, but that was very rare, and it became a source of contention between my fellow alums. Junior: My experience over the past three years enrolled in Ponte Vedra High School has been a rollercoaster. Many ups and downs, however, overall my experience has been a positive one. Class difficulty and projects would fluctuate but tests, homework, and assignments would remain constant. I have had supportive teachers at Ponte Vedra High School who pushed me to become the best student. The low points of school came during finals, AP exams, and tests. School is an overwhelmingly stressful environment and we are never given a break until the very last day of school. I would argue many students have low support in their mental health and are expected to preform their best and overworked to an extreme point. This aspect of school needs to be changed, I understand we need homework and exams to test our knowledge; however, there needs to be a limit on how much work students will receive and can balance in a healthy way.... Senior: Best: The career academies (especially Teaching and Environmental science) go above and beyond to give their students the best in-field experiences possible. They nurture the academies’ impact on the surrounding community and teach their students how to navigate diverse environments to their best abilities. Worst: As a person of color it has been very difficult to see my peers experience prejudice and have administrators fail to meet their needs and serve proper infractions for different types of misbehavior. Also, Fletcher provides many options for clubs and if there is a club you feel is missing, students have the option to create their own club. They give you lots of academic opportunities such as the collegiate program and others such as engineering or art. I partake in the collegiate program and even though it is a very hard program, for those who are willing to work hard, it pays off in the end. Senior: I attended Pedro Menendez high school, my freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior year. I had a pretty good experience overall. I was involved in honors courses all four years of high school, IB , and the Drafting academy. I had good connections with most of my teachers, and did well academically. The only flaw was the guidance department. While looking into college and scholarships my senior year, I had a tough time getting a hold of my counselor. I had to submit documents, and get a hold of certain forms, as well as discussing my test scores/eligibility for scholarships. My counselor wasn't very helpful, and it often took them months to help me. This added more stress to my senior year. Regardless, my senior year went well and I was able to figure out college and financial aid on my own. I'm glad to have attended Pedro menendez high school, and I look forward to college.... Sophomore: My experience at West Nassau High School for my second year now would be very good. I say this because of the friendly staff and the clean environment that our custodians work hard to maintain.
