Senior: When applying to high schools in middle school, I knew where exactly I wanted to go to. I was interested in CAST Tech High School because they had a business pathway. They are the only school in the San Antonio Independent School District that had a business pathway. At CAST Tech high school once you walk through the school doors you can already feel the community and the good vibes the school brings. The students and staff there all get along with one anther and it feels like one big family. I have meet people that will definitely be lifelong friends. Throughout my years at CAST Tech I have learned communication, time management, and responsibility skills. Without having these skills I believe I would not succeed in my future. Senior: BASIS San Antonio Shavano Campus has academic rigor like no other. The emphasis on STEM subjects genuinely helps students to prepare for their futures, and with the help of the college counselors, their higher education. In addition, BASIS provides some degree of flexibility in scheduling, allowing each student to customize their own path and achieve their own greatness. However, no school is perfect, and aide from the expected antipathy of the students towards the immense workload, BASIS sports are less than ideal, even in the scope of the Charter League, and so are the arts, moreso fine than liberal. Senior: My older sister came to this school before I did and hearing about her experience made me all the more excited to come too! The staff and teachers are all super friendly and easy to talk to. They are also understanding and make learning fun! As in the name, "Early College," after passing the TSI, students are enrolled in college classes. I have had no problems or complaints about any of my past professors. Everything was awesome! This school also works in a student to help them develop accountability and time management skills which are very useful for future endeavors. Senior: HSA is a very small school, so the students and teachers are close knit. The school makes an effort to promote STEM by requiring students to partake in science fairs and PBL projects, which is nice if you are interested in STEM. The school does not have many clubs unrelated to STEM, which is disappointing. There are not many classes to choose from either, likely because of low budget and not enough staff. I appreciate that the school pays for AP and dual credit classes, and will pay for AP tests that you express interest in even if the school doesn't offer the class. The college counselors work very closely with the students, and are great supporters. Unfortunately, the school does not seem to offer study halls or periods for students to work elsewhere, so balancing a work schedule may be difficult. Personally, I would appreciate it if yearbooks could arrive before the end of the school year. There is no time to get autographs, especially from friends that won't be returning.... Works Here: This school is a gem. The Early College program allows students to earn credit at Texas A&M San Antonio while also earning high school credit. They also have a great Audio & Video program where students learn about technology which is so important to learn about, especially today. The sports programs are excellent in Basketball, Volleyball, Track and Flag Football. Both the Volleyball and Basketball teams were undefeated the past year and district champions. The staff works hard to provide a quality education and the students all seem to get along very well. Junior: Two-time Blue Ribbon school, recognized for outstanding academic achievement, Young Women's Leadership Academy is an exceptionally well school, providing students with skills for college readiness. From a student's perspective, attending this school throughout middle school was definitely something to get used to, from all-girls, to fast paced classes, it was safe to say that nobody liked being challenged in these ways. Entering as a class of 100 girls, we now remain at 42 in high school. Each and every one of us are enrolled in a variety of different classes, and I believe that this is extremely important in personal development to discover different pathways for college. Ranging from Dual Enrollment, to Advanced Placement, to Honors classes, it's very safe to say that most of us can now appreciate the challenging work that we have done here at this school that has prepared us in so many ways on our way to college through community service hours, school involvement, and so much more.... Senior: What i like about Idea South Flores is that all teachers give a 100% to purse your education. You do feel welcome and encouraged to look for your college readiness. When needing extra help there is always peers and teachers by your side. Counselers are just great, always there when needing assistance with college applications, resumes, going over acceptance letters, etc. A change i would like to see is academics such as programs, taking classes that your majoring in just so when entering college you have knowledge. Senior: I have been enrolled at Randolph for 5 years now, during my time there I have been able to excel in my studies and expand the once-tiny social life I had. However, some teachers can be a little rough around the edges when it comes to teaching, especially my couches for track and powerlifting. Nevertheless, through sweat and tears, I was able to complete assignments and win some competitions. This is precisely why I've enjoyed my time here at Randolph. My teachers pushed me because I didn't push myself; they saw the best in me even when I didn't see it in myself. As my senior year brings my time with Randolph to an end I think fondly of my time there. Life is full of joys and heartache but Randolph and its staff make it easier to handle the ups and downs. However, I do have a suggestion for future students. I would love to see the expansion of sports activities since the limited size doesn't allow sports such as soccer or wrestling, which I believe would bring opportunities to students.... Senior: As the only early college High School in HISD, STEM is a great addition to the district. They offer students, in a low income district, an opportunity to further their education. The best part about STEM is they pay for the degree students will earn, and provides all students with a laptop! STEM also provides students with free breakfast and lunch, as they are a low income school. All the staff members at the school are committed to helping students navigate college and high school life. The small school size provides students with a chance to make strong bonds with teachers. It's great to see how dedicated the whole staff is on helping students accomplish their goals. Although STEM scores big points academically, it is far different than a typical high school. They do not have many after school activities. For example, STEM has no sports teams. If you want to play sports you must join the home school teams. (Harlandale or McCollum). Senior: Robert G. Cole is a military school on Fort Sam Airforce Base. Because of its nature, the school houses some of the most respectful people I have had the pleasure of talking to. The students know what is expected of them, and they take all the opportunities the school provides. Cole is constantly changing, and it adds new classes and invites students to try many academic ventures. Teachers love what they do and share their knowledge with the students well. Here at Cole, we incorporate a "flex" system, that is to say, our schedules are flexible. On certain days and during certain periods, we are allowed to visit another teacher's classroom, which allows us to study, catch up, or just hang out. Cole prepares students for college by providing college-level classes and higher-learning clubs. Senior: The best parts of my experience within Idea Mays would definitely be the community we built. My class, the class of 2024, is one of the founding classes for the school we have built traditions for younger grades to follow. We helped set up the presidency and due to the size of the classes we grew close-knit. However the worst part of my experience going to the school would have to be the stress level. Having seven AP courses last year of high school is a bit difficult but the teachers are really good at helping you. Something I would love to see change in the school is an increase in clubs and activities it would help decompress the students. Sophomore: ALA is a great school! I was originally in a school located in a rural town, so ALA was huge upgrade for me in many ways. The teachers are amazing, and admin is very helpful with career planning. One thing I like about ALA is that the student voice is very powerful, in the sense that anything we bring up to admin is improved upon to the best of their ability. This also applies to personal issues with classes. For example, normally I wouldn’t be able to intern as a sophomore, but I asked my counselor if he could figure something out and he made it happen for me! My only issues have been with the lack of parent involvement, especially in extracurricular activities. Also the bathrooms are not the cleanest, but that’s more of an issue with students than the school itself. Overall, ALA is the best school I could ask for and I always feel valued when I’m there.... Junior: KIPP University prep is a college preparatory high school that offers ib and ap courses for all eligible students for a chance to earn college credit. I am currently Enrolled in the ib program and I am enjoying it immensely. I have been at KIPP my entire high school career and it has helped me immensely with college prep. We have counselors who are walking us every step of the way to college whether that being applying for scholarships and fafsa to learning about different programs that will offer financial aid, internships, and other incentives. They also offer moral support because they understand the stresses of taking college level courses while still looking for our desired colleges and majors. Junior: Since I was attending Tejeda Middle School beforehand, Johnson was the next step for my education journey and one I don’t regret being a part of. Not only have I deepened my friendships and made new ones, I’ve also discovered what I truly wanted to do at the school. Johnson’s excellent healthcare diagnostics route for classes have allowed me to understand what I want to do in the future, specialize in the healthcare industry as an optometrist or otherwise. Not only are the career classes great but also the history/social studies ones. AP Human Geography and AP World History, classes I’ve attended, have expanded my love for history; even making me read more books outside of the school! While I think that Johnson is overall a good school, there are some general issues. Senior: Judson Early College Academy is a great school for anyone who is interested in getting a preview of the college experience. From day one, everything is designed to prepare you for not only your current college endeavors but future ones as well. However, I would not recommend this school if you want to go to a large school and participate in a large variety of clubs/extracurriculars. Or if you want to explore your academic interests because there is no variety of courses available (ex. computer science, health science, debate/law). Everyone has a set course plan for all four years. Regardless, once you graduate from JECA you will receive a Highschool Diploma and an Associate's Degree in Liberal Arts! Senior: My experience while attending Premier High School was overall relaxing for me. I have anxiety and tend to get easily overwhelmed in large crowds and cannot concentrate in large classrooms. So the small classes and privacy that was available for me, was very helpful and made me feel comfortable in the environment that I was in. The teachers are very understanding and helpful with anything you may not understand about the curriculum. Most teachers are younger and therefore give off a more approachable energy for students as well as myself. I liked the flexibility regarding school hours. Senior: Overall my high school experience has been interesting. Harlandale High school was where my mother and father attended when they were in high school. It made sense that as the oldest sibling I would follow a similar journey like they did in their youth. Within my school there was always an event occurring or any type of surprise would happen. I've always enjoyed my school's pep rallies where they really expressed their pride in our school. Senior: Travis Early College Highschool is a challenging school that definitely helps you be prepared and ready for colleges, universities, and overall your future success. All the faculty is nice and understanding but there are a few that are very strict with rules. Overall the school itself has a comforting and reassuring environment in which you can find yourself and your friend group. Many of the teachers are very good with understanding different peoples situations, so they are always willing to be flexible as long as you discuss it. Senior: Anne Frank Inspire Academy is a charter school with a very strong basis in college readiness. AFIA offers a number of dual credit opportunities with Northwest Vista Community College. AFIA also requires its Juniors and Seniors to take Dual Enrollment Classes with UT Austin OnRamps to feel how college classes work and how they run. College preparation starts at the beginning of Junior year and applications to colleges for seniors are required to start as soon as college applications open for schools. Anne Frank offers a great self-paced learning environment that works well for students who are proactive in their goals.
