Parent: My sons been going here since kindergarten, he’s now in 6th grade. We LOVE it! This school is GREAT! It’s small, community driven with a major emphasis on the outdoors as the kids go out & explore the neighborhood weekly and go on big trips all over the Portland area several times a month. It’s a place based education model. I have had nothing but helpful and communicative teachers and staff when I have questions or concerns. Most of the parents are very involved in volunteering and helping the school in various ways. So far this year is my sons favorite with the best teacher he’s had (in his opinion) which says a lot as we enter the pre teen/teen years. My son is helping me write this review and he says, “the teachers are great and it’s the best school in the world”.... Read 4 reviews

Parent: We moved to Portland half way through the year with a 5th, 3rd and 1st grader. They'd previously been at a Public Charter Waldorf school in our old town and we wanted to continue with the Waldorf way of teaching kids. 2 of them meshed in pretty seemlessly while the other has had a bit of a struggle due to a teacher change among other things. Through this transition we have been met with support, communication and kindness. It is an incredibly inclusive and warm environment. The teachers genuinely care and are tackling the pretty huge task of helping kids assimilate back to school after Covid. Unfortunately there is a new mindset among many parents that their children do not have to take accountability for their actions (which they get because their parents wont take accountability for their own). Many behavioral issues are excused instead of allowing normal consequences. Its no wonder teachers are quitting a profession they love. PVS has been great for our family and is appreciated.... Parent: Riverdale's K-8 program is a rare gem amongst public schools, in my opinion. My children have attended since kindergarten, and we all agree the school is phenomenal. The small class size provides a safe, supportive environment that challenges students to go deep and persevere with curiosity. The curriculum is hands-on and offers many creative experiences beyond the classroom. The district has a foundation to augment the funding per child received from the state. I wish all schools had our funding. It really makes a difference. The K-8 experience prepares them well for high school which then sets them up for success after graduation. Parent: This school is amazing. It's a small public charter school that excels in teaching kids to read, write and do math all before leaving kindergarten. Because it is a charter they do not receive the same funding as public school. The teachers love and do everything they can to give each student the tools they need to succeed in getting their education. Alum: I studied at Beverly Cleary Middle School for two consecutive years: grades 7-8. It was a lovely experience as the staff really got to know you and everyone was very inclusive. Coming from a different country and having this as my first ever school in the U.S. was a wise choice. Located in Portland, it has a lot of diversity and promotes freedom of expression. What perplexed me though was the students' attitudes compared to what I experienced in Asia. They were too direct and blunt that they lacked finesse and seemed to be a tad bit more rude in an outsider's perspective. Having to wear casual clothes instead of uniforms was also a huge leap for independence as conformity dims more and more into the background.... Read 4 reviews

Parent: We are very happy with the principle and dedicated staff. We have 3 kiddos, the third will start kindergarten this fall and are excited to find out which great teacher she will get. Overall the staff is responsive to requests for time to speak with them. Some more than others due to personality. This school has changed my views on the importance of the PTA and the Stephenson Foundation. Our previous elementary schools prior to moving here couldn’t do that. I am now actively involved and the positive, inclusive, goal oriented volunteers deserve lots of credit for continuing to keep the class sizes small and the academics relevant with providing technology and supplies the teachers request. High School Senior: Winterhaven releases students into the world who are confident from being in an environment where every teacher knows their name and personally encourages them to flourish. By the time kids enter High School they will be one to two years ahead in both math and science, along with having experiences only truly obtainable in a small school such as theater, event planning, and self advocation.
