Junior: I am a junior at Bergen County Academies and I have had a good experience so far. The teachers at Bergen County Academies are for the most part very knowledgeable in their fields. They are willing to go above and beyond. I also appreciate the fact that the school tries to ensure college readiness through guidance seminar and an overall competitive environment. One thing that I would like to see change at Bergen County Academies is the availability of resources for students. While the school does have a lot of resources available, I feel like there could be more support for students who are struggling academically or who need extra help. Another issue students may encounter is the fact that they are locked into their chosen academy. Overall, my experience at Bergen County Academies has been positive. It is a great school with a strong focus on academics and extracurricular activities, but getting involved in those activities might be difficult due to the already extended school day.... Junior: I've been at Highlands for a bit over 2 years now. I'm a very academic-heavy student, and I love that Highlands enables that very well. We have acceleration courses over the summer for those who qualify, Honors and AP level courses in every subject, and even special advancement programs. For people who love school and learning, this is the place to go. The school culture can be a bit dry, but it does create an environment very conducive to learning and socializing. Of course there are also plenty of negatives. Our school is not very diverse at all, with extremely few students of color or first generation students. Courses are very rigorous compared to other schools, and grades aren't the easiest to maintain. There are some teachers that aren't especially good or understanding, and the administration is heavily biased towards sports rather than academics. Senior: I love my experience at the frisch school. During vacations and breaks, I just look forward to coming back. The atmosphere in the school is focused solely around kindness and inclusivity, and the teachers are accommodating. Most, if not all, students at frisch have healthy, close, relationships with their teachers, and most of whom go out of their ways to help their students. Alum: Going to Don Bosco Prep was the best thing that could’ve ever happened to me. Whatever you wanted to do while there, you were supported by all faculty and stuff while also being pushed by other students to succeed. Academically, the school’s AP and Honors classes are for the most part taught by some of the wisest people I have ever met. They make sure you are prepared for every academic challenge you will see in the future. On the sports side, they provide a great amount of support for the athletes and are extremely flexible when I comes to fitting in academics alongside athletics. Overall, you can tell that they care about the students at Don Bosco Prep the moment you step on campus, something I did not feel when I visited Saint Joes or Bergen Catholic. Alum: Right now, I know that the school is in complete disarray. The goals of the school have been undermined by the school board for years, as many do not send their kids to the school, yet determine what happens at the school. As for me, my experience in the early 80's was great. The school population was extremely high, and finding your own niche whether it be cool, popular, nerdy, theatrical etc, wasn't hard to find as many of the niche's crossed over. Parent: I am a high achieving type A mom. When my child was diagnosed with a profound speech delay at age 3 I honestly feared for his future. Our middle school recommended that we "shop around" for the right high school for our child. We chose this school for our son because he's a talented artist who's book smart but painfully shy. We feared that he'd get lost in the crowd and not learn much at our district school. The attention to my child's educational and emotional needs at this school has been truly stellar. He's going off to a very good college next year and we could not be prouder. He had really blossomed at Bergen Tech and we could not be more thrilled. The staff, the teaching philosophy, the way this community cares for its own is second to none. My child has received a private school education in this wonderful public school.
