Freshman: The decision to attend Asheville School was and still is the best decision in my life. The sense of community is like no other school I have attended or visited. Niche User: A great community of learners where faculty and students are driven and encouraged to learn. Faculty and Administration are always looking to build community within the school as well as expanding the community beyond the classroom. They engage students in strong academics to be ready for the next phases. They are equipped with strong academic foundations and how to be compassionate, effective citizens. And, students have fun while they learn in this loving community! My children are graduates. It was the best investment we ever made!... Read 26 reviews

Junior: What I really like about Nesbitt Discovery Academy is the community. The school is much smaller than that of a traditional high school, but the faculty and students have established a welcoming environment. The teachers and students interact all the time, even during a pandemic. As a fellow student, I have experienced encouragement and support from countless individuals. One of the biggest reasons why I like this school is because of the teachers. They are AMAZING! What I'd like to see more of is recognition for the school. I think we deserve more recognition than we currently get. I would've liked to see more of my peers interested in this school back in middle school. Otherwise, I'd say my experience has been memorable.... Read 42 reviews

Junior: Woodberry has been the best decision I have ever made. The teachers are second to none at offering their assistance to students who have trouble studying or do not understand the ideas they teach. At Woodberry, academic success is less about the grades and more about the spirit you develop when tackling problems. Being at Woodberry has taught me that the best way to problem solve is to meet the adversary head on and not be afraid to fail. At Woodberry, failing after attempting something challenging is met with compassion and teachers who are more than happy to help you up again and give you another shot.... Read 38 reviews

Parent: I have two children at ACA. It is not a perfect school filled with perfect people, nor does it claim to be. That's actually what we love about it. They are willing to "run to the mess" as the Head of School often says. They have equipped and caring teacher as well as strong extra-curricular programs. In the midst of the pandemic, they've navigated the extreme opinions of community members well. I wouldn't put my children at any other school.... Read 46 reviews

Senior: Overall high school was a decent experience, even though the mean girls and the stereotypical athletes were real the teachers actually care about their students. They spend a majority of their time doing things to aid us and help us to succeed in life! The only thing that I would change is certain school regulations dominate the school and sometimes it feels like administration does not actually care about the well being of their students but the appearance of the school.... Senior: Mount Pisgah Academy for me is actually a boarding school, but we do have village students. I attended the school for the last two years of highschool so my Junior and Senior year. We get to experience sports like volleyball, soccer and basketball for girls. For guys soccer and basketball. The school also provides an acro team, a drama club, hand bells assemble, choir, and band. Our school this year was pretty small, but because of that we are all pretty much close everyone knows each other. Because its an Adventist school the food is vegeterian, but still very good. I was an RA this year so I had a leadership position. The school doesn't have prom but it substitute it with a banquet where we can dress up formally or according to what theme SA has chosen. The classes are small so you can get an interaction with the teachers and the students. We have dorms so you have many sisters or brothers among you. Mount Pisgah Academy may be small this year but it has heart.... Read 32 reviews

They speak to him every time they serd him. They even give him snacks so he won't be Hangry. He graduates this year, and it is bittersweet. Junior: Owen is an amazing high school. The teachers get to know you on a personal level, and try to help you make connections between your personal life and the subject they teach to make everything make better sense. The teachers also care so much about you and it makes you feel wanted and cared about. They also help you discover what you want to do and how to get there. All of my teachers have been there to support me in whatever I do. When I wanted to start a club, everyone was on board including administration. If I had any issues with school, simply talking to an adult at my school would mean something would be done about it. They strive to make sure every student graduates and helps students to further themselves after graduation! I'm so pleased with my high school and one day when I have kids they will also come to be a warhorse at Owen just like I did!... Read 88 reviews

Niche User: This is more of an alternative school. It's for students who aren't doing so well or don't fit in a normal classroom setting. There is a process you must go through to get into the school. You must write a paper to the school of why you should be accepted. The classrooms are much smaller, giving teachers the opportunity to pay more individual attention to students. There is not a variety of classes, like medical and what not. They're geared more towards getting high risk students the minimum to graduate. The school day is a bit shorter, 9 am to 2pm. They have a daycare and a club I believe for young mothers. My boyfriend actually got involved in a program through the school in which they offered him employment as long as he was attending school, he worked at big lots for the remainder of the school year. It's really a great school for students who need help staying on track.... Read 4 reviews

Parent: Odyssey School has developed a beautifully comprehensive and community-based approach to learning and education. Our son gets to explore learning from the 6-strand model that Odyssey has incorporated as part of their curriculum, which includes learning how to learn from a multi-dimensional perspective that includes, social, academic, environmental, justice, emotional, deep listening, and creative/musical development (to name a few). For me, this is the true essence of education that Odyssey provides, a place where a child can grow and thrive in an environment that holds them with respect, accountability, autonomy, agency, and friendliness. They also value community and their school events (pre-pandemic) were lovely in-person events that supported community building and a deep sense of belongingness. We love this school (our son included), and we recommend this school with much enthusiasm!... Read 31 reviews

Parent: We moved to Asheville in 2012 and discovered Pre-K for our 3 year-old son at Rainbow Community School. We have been absolutely thrilled with our son's education so far- he's in 6th grade! Originally a child enrolled in outside physical, occupational, and speech therapies, we had concerns about how he would handle school and how his school would handle him. Rainbow has shown an unconditional supporting, loving, nurturing, intellectually stimulating, and absolutely fulfilling experience for him and our family. I could not say enough good things about this school- it is one of two prime reasons we have stayed in Asheville through thick and thin (the other being extended family!). We will always have so much gratitude to Rainbow for helping us raise our son...and we have faith the foundation he has been given through this school will carry him on to a truly successful, well-rounded life.... The school is true to the child's education, and classes are not a blend. All three of my kids have thrived under the direction of teachers who have taught at Emmanuel Lutheran School for many years. Parent: We enrolled our son in Fork Union Military Academy after seeing so many YouTube videos that touted the benefits of the one-subject program and the school. The promise of focus, structure, and accomplishment came through. He passed all his classes in this, his first year, a sophomore at FUMA. We took advantage of their academic success program. There he found continuous support and cheers! They found novel approaches to reach him, took the time to learn about him, and flexed their approaches. I have been concerned in the past about the ability of teachers who are not Black to 'see my son' as an individual. At FUMA, they know him, challenge him to be his best, hold him accountable, and motivate him. I am proud of what he has done this year. As a testament to the place, he is looking forward to going back in the Fall - he's proud that he's earned a promotion in rank and knows he can do even better academically. Amazing....
