Parent: We have a rising Kindergartener, who finished his first year at Friends in Pre-K. As a parent, and an educational professional, I personally could not have designed a better experience for my son, especially during the COVID-related shut down. We initially chose Friends for our son because we wanted more for him; we wanted him to learn through experience, to develop thoughts of his own and more importantly to be part of a community that subscribed to similar values as ours. Our son’s first year was FANTASTIC! Notably, while everyone was scrambling to figure things out when the State shut down, our son was being educated and supported in a way that was developmentally appropriate, fun and responsive. The transition to virtual school was so seamless, that it seemed like it was planned for (it might have been). More importantly, the teachers were open and responsive to feedback, and continued to tweak the new modality regularly. We are looking forward to many more years at Friends!... Read 92 reviews

Sophomore: I have many opportunities at Portledge, which is something I love about the school. I love our campus because it is very college-like and due to this, the students have a lot of responsibilities, some examples would be having everything we need before walking across campus and scheduling meetings with teachers. Portledge has many pros, but just like any institution, there are also cons. Being an black student at Portledge, a prominently white school, I feel that most of the students are blind to what the (very few) minorities at the school face. I wouldn't say that we face racism, but we have to deal with not being able to say certain things or be our full selves because most of the students there do not understand. I feel that Portledge's curriculum (and other private schools) could be improved by including more modern events that impact some of the students that attend the school. Parent: I used this same review for Baylis Elementary, but it also applies to the middle and high school...our oldest went through the system as well. Our taxes are a bit higher than most other areas , but we get great schools like this and great families as well. Many of the parents may have accents and speak not-so-perfect English, but their values are the same as all Syosset residents. Schools are more than just teachers, programs and facilities. It's who your child is sitting next to and what they bring to your child's life. When so many of our friends in Queens and Manhattan are stressed and scrambling to find schools for their kids to attend, it's nice to know that we don't have to worry about anything for 12 years. +++We were just notified by email that Syosset will be offering Mandarin ESL to incoming 1st and 2nd graders in 2023. Senior: Since will have only spent my senior year at Half Hollow Hills High School East, I do not have much material to base my thoughts around. However, during my short time here, I can safely state that the academic aspect of the school is superb. The teaching staff is effective overall, with a wide variety of electives being available as well. Many of the parents may have accents and speak not-so-perfect English, but their values are the same as all Syosset residents. Schools are more than just teachers, programs and facilities. It's who your child is sitting next to and what they bring to your child's life. Senior: My high school experience was amazing at POBJFK high school. Being an athlete, the athletics were very inclusive and each and every sport made you feel like you were a part of a family and something bigger than yourself. The academics are excellent and the teachers truly cared about helping the students reach their full potential by offering help almost every day after school. However, one thing that I would like to see change is the school spirit. The events that the school ran didn’t have an amazing turnout unless it was for college or an academic purpose. Parent: We could not be more thrilled with our choice to send our daughter to school at Luhi! The small class sizes, engaged staff and nurturing environment have really allowed our daughter to flourish. Her teachers have really gotten to know her, which has made her feel very comfortable. She is happy and willing to go to school every day- and we fully believe that is because of the warm, caring, welcoming environment. Parent: I have 3 children at SSLI. My children have all attended since Kindergarten. One is in elementary school, one is in middle school, and, one is in high school. I love the school. The class sizes are small and the teachers truly care about the students' well-being: academically; socially; and, emotionally. The teachers are all approachable. If a student needs extra help in a subject, it is provided. Also, the teachers regularly communicate with the parents. In addition to an excellent secular academic program and Jewish Studies program, the students are taught personal responsibility, accountability, compassion, and kindness. They are taught how to become leaders and how to individually take steps to make the world a better place. This is one of the special things that sets SSLI apart from other schools. Junior: The administrators and educators at Bethpage Senior High School have their student's best interests at heart and truly try to help us succeed. Our school has an abundance of resources including extra help and an academic center. Pre-COVID the library was open after school so students could study and gain extra help. Our school prides itself on the student's hard work and determination in their classes. Bethpage offers many AP classes and test scores often have high successful rates. Our school is heavily sports orientated and has a good music program. As a music and art student, I can attest to the fact that the teachers of each program work hard to make the experience as best as possible. Our school has two theatre productions-a musical and a play-as well as a select vocal ensemble and honor society. Senior: As a soon to graduate senior, I have had all the resources needed to succeed and supportive teachers to help me on the way. The school’s staff is great and the majority of the teachers are cool, most more than not. Ive had access to state of the art technology and facilities. The only thing holding me back from giving a full 5 stars is the fact that the seniors have felt a bit neglected this year due to senior privileges being loosely enforced, if even so, such as senior parking being limited due to not cracking down on juniors parking, a senior cafe that any grade level has access to; seniors being forced to eat lunch in a hallway instead of their own cafeteria; and biggest of all, no senior trip. The school advertises their Italy pilgrimage strongly but it only applies to the chorus which the majority is not involved in. Senior: Chaminade High School is a Catholic school in Mineola, New York. It is a very prestigious school that offers many activities and athletics to add on to the experience. I feel it is one of the top schools in the country as it has a educational building, a unique science building, a three floor gym, and an amazing athletic center.
